Wow, not posting for a couple of days and I have like 10 pages of comments to catch up on- blah!
My thoughts on the whole BSN thing...
We haven't started the actual Watts nursing classes yet, so we may very well need a mental break over the summers. Also, if you can get on as an NA in a field you're interested in, you could gain experience that will help you decide to pursue a certain nursing specialty. It would also give you the opportunity to get to know the right people and for them to get to know you and your work ethic. And to make some $$ over the summer.
As far as paying for school goes, alot of employers will pay for BSN courses while you are working as an RN. So while we may save time by taking classes over the summer, it may be more costly. And since starting pay for BSN and RN is aprx. the same, why not let someone else pay while you make a decent salary? And there is always the option of going RN to MSN too and skip the whole BSN all together.
Oh and another bit of $$ encouragement, if you work for Duke after graduating, not only do they do tuition reimbursement for Watts students, there is additional reimbursement that they offer to all new RN hires regardless of where they graduate from. So it would be on top of our Watts monies. My friend works at the pediatric bone marrow transplant unit at Duke and she said you get a total of 10k in two 5k installments. All you have to do is fill out paperwork when you're hired!
Not that I'm not supportive of having the option to study over the summers, I just think it may be more beneficial in the long run to work... but that's just me! :)
I really want my psych grade!!!!
