The ant-vaccers must be proud.

I grew up in this area and I am really unsurprised. The demographics are a weird mixture: 1) upper-middle-class Portland commuters, some of whom believe that a kale and chia seed smoothie will do more for their precious angel's health than a vaccine. 2) people who proudly declare themselves "rednecks," some of whom are insistent that the government is putting poison in the water/trees/vaccines. 3) a smattering of Russian/Slavic immigrants who are generally distrustful of institutions, including healthcare ones.
My parents didn't suffer fools and dragged me and my sisters (sometimes kicking and screaming) to the doctors for all our shots. But the vocal (and dangerous) minority who don't vaccinate persist
These anti-vaxxers are a true menace. The outbreak is spreading.
QuoteThe number of people with measles in the ongoing Vancouver-area outbreak rose to 49 on Monday, including one adult between the ages of 30 and 40, The Oregonian reported. The new patient is the oldest person in this outbreak to be diagnosed; only one other adult has been identified so far. Nine more people are also suspected of having measles; public health officials are awaiting test results before making any further announcements. If those cases are confirmed, the number of people infected by this outbreak, which is largely fueled by unvaccinated people, will swell to 58 patients

This is sad and ridiculous at the same time. I have family there and worry about them. I have also heard that some of these anti-vaxxers get their kids together for a chicken pox party so all the kids will be exposed at the same time and get it over with when they are young. PEOPLE!!

It's really time to stamp out these morons. No vaccine-- no school, public or private. No vaccine, no social security card. They are immune to reasoning.
I had a fascinating experience over the winter when I met some folks that think the Earth is flat. They had a "reasonable and skeptical" opinion for every fact I talked to them about. I asked them about the videos from either pole--- clearly edited and false. And on and on. They were exactly like the anti-vaxxers.
Meanwhile, the folks spreading illness are whining that they are victims. Some are even getting death threats. F*@% them.
QuoteOn the other side, anti-vaxxer moms and dads say they have received death threats from furious parents, blaming them for the outbreak. Moms and dads who stand for “vaccine choice” have become pariahs of the community, they said, for exercising their legal right to opt out of the vaccinations. (In Oregon and Washington, residents can choose not to get the shots for non-religious “personal” reasons.)“I’ve been told I’m a terrible mother, that families like mine should live in quarantine, that we should be jailed—and that our son should be taken from us,” said Jodie B., a 45-year-old mom who lives near Portland and said she supports “vaccine freedom.”Measles—which can cause deafness, brain swelling, nerve damage or even death—is one of the most contagious vaccine-preventable infections on earth.

Stupid is as stupid does.
When I was young, there was no vaccine for the childhood diseases, and I basically got all of them (except for whooping cough). Today there is no need, and no excuse, for children to go through the disease process.
Chicken pox party, indeed.

Same here and I had chicken pox as a teen and it was horrible, and now run the risk of shingles. Why would people want this for their kids is beyond me!!

I remember my mother putting calamine lotion on the lesions to cut down on the itching.
