Does anyone know how much Washington Hospital in Fremont pays New Grad RNs or a Staff Nurse I? I heard that they pay their nurses really well. One experienced per diem nurse said she gets about $85/hr or something base (day shift, I believe). I also heard of a nurse getting like $90 something. I was shocked! I'm just curious as to how they can pay their nurses so much. Is this hospital a good place to work? Thanks.

I live near this hospital, and know people that work there, and if you'll pardon the cliche, "I wouldn't be caught dead there."
From the street it looks practically abandoned, inside it looks like a really old military hospital. It's staffed with traveler's and per diem players. It has a very poor reputation in the community, and it's well deserved.

I know a LVN that worked there about 3 years ago and he told me he made $34 an hour (back then) so I can only imagine how much the RNs make. He also told me the workload there was ridiculous and he quit.

I know this thread is a couple months old but just wondering if the OP or others are working there now?

New grads start at about $47/hr and work 40hrs per week...There are basically no CNAs..so everything is done by the RN. Just like every hospital some preceptors are supportive some are not, so the support you get will vary.

Hi! How did you happen to know that there's newgrad program in Washington hospital? I'm interested too. Plz give me info where to inquire ( contact person & contact phone number) about the said program. I heard they really pay good salary. I'm also interested about your job interview. Just keep me posted. Thanks!

My friend, who is a new grad starting April 2009, got paid $52 for PM shift, there is no nurse assistant on his floor and he has four patient loads. Overtime is very hard to get in Washington hospital and the nurse association stands on the same side as the management. A lot of per diem and on-call staff, not a fun place to work at.

I had several clinicals rotations at this hospital while in nursing school. And, while the posters above are correct about the pay, from what I saw they work their nurses into the ground. Regardless of shift or unit, nurses often have to work for hours "off the books" after their shift is over, to complete their charting. Otherwise they are threatened with "counciling" about their "time management skills" (aka: their jobs are threatened, if they don't keep their mouth shut and go along with management).
Also, when the CA Patio Ratio Law went into effect, Washington Hospital immediately began violating the "No Ancillary Staff Reductions" clause of that law, by firing most all their nurses aids, and assigning their workload to the RN staff. This despite, explicit language in the law making it illegal to do so. And the union, does nothing about it because they are in bed with management.
Patients at Washington Hospital are placed in jeopardy everyday, so deadwood Nurse Managers can earned fat-cat bonuses by denying requests for much needed safety support like having at least two CNAs on each unit/shift so RNs can do patient care, and not lose time with patients over having to do housekeeping. Or by assigning a sitter to a falls precautions patient or a patient with a psych profile who may hurt themself when the RN is out of the room (probably doing CNA work with another patient).
During one semester, I saw four patients injured due to falls, and never once heard a word about an investigation into why it was happening. The falls were just quietly swept under the rug. Just getting a low-boy bed to reduce the likelihood of a fall was like trying to get blood from a stone.
And it's all done in the name of maintaining the "Allmighty Budget", while patient's suffer, and manager's earn their big rewards.
I was offered a job at Washignton Hospital when I graduated in May'08, but I turned them down. Any hospital which puts profits ahead of patients lives should be shutdown by the State, and the Management Ghouls barred from working in healthcare. Washignton Hospital is at the top of that list.
