MedStar WHC rotating shifts question

U.S.A. Washington DC

Published

Hi, could anyone who works at Washington Hospital Center, or has worked there, shed some light on the rotating shifts: How long do you typically work on day shift, for example, before switching to nights, then back again?

Thanks!

I just accepted a rotating shift job at WHC, in the interview they explained to me that I would be scheduled 3 weeks straight day shift/ 3 weeks straight night shift. I can add extra shifts on either day or night, but the original schedule is 50/50 and they try to give at least 3 days to transition schedules.

CodeRed5, thank you so much for responding to this post. I thought it had long been buried. This is very helpful. Thanks again, and best wishes with the new job!

It varies based on the units. When I was rotating we did 4 weeks days and 2 weeks nights. As long as the shifts are covered...you may have some flexibility. I'm strictly nights now.

It completely varies by unit and is typically left up to the individual requesting the scheduler and then upon schedule approval. The only restriction is how close your shifts can be scheduled when you're changing from nights to days and days to nights.
