Was just hired as a new grad at the Health Department...Any Advice?

Published

After a few interviews, I was offered a position this morning at the Health Department as a Public Health Nurse I in Women's Services. I am a new grad and am very shocked!!:yeah: Can anyone offer advice? I had a Community Health clinical while in school and LOVED it! Does anyone currently work at the Health department? I have been looking for a job for over a year so currently I am dumbfounded...filled with shock/happiness/joy/nerves.....:lol2:

Don't be shocked. This is a great nursing job. You have done clinical and therefore know kindof who your patients will be. I'd just say to trust your knowledge and build on it. Look for a nurse who seems to know her stuff and make friends with her and show her respect. Look for an MD who seems willing to teach and make friends.

This economy will bring you all sorts of patients. Remember to look at EVERYBODY as just needing your help. Some will be grateful, some won't. But I figure those who just cannot make ends meet are often such good people. Those will make you want to cry. The abusers of the system of course, will make you really PO'd. Just remember those good folks and their kids along the way.

Will do and you gave me wonderful advice. Thank You :) I am definitely going to work on finding a nurse/physician whom I can learn from and model after. I am open to learning anything and everything...I want to make a difference!
