wanting to travel to NYC

I'm wanting to start travel nursing in New York City. Has anyone travelled here? Anyone have any travel company reccomendations?

Thanks!

If you are wanting to relocate after the travel assignments make sure your contract doesn't say anything about a non compete clause other wise you won't be able to work for the same hospital for atleast a year after your assignment. If you do end up with the evil empire you have to be a great negociator (sp?) becuase they WILL under pay you and not think twice about it. I think they are the worst companies to do that to travellers, especially new ones. Talk to every traveller you can. Make sure you know your ups and downs of your speciality because you are expected to know your stuff and you are thrown into the fire. Most orientations are one day on the floor. New Yorkers (or most New Englanders for that matter) don't have a problem telling you what is on their mind and they don't sugar coat it either. Know your stuff.

All this talk makes me want to take an assignment in Manhattan. How can you not love that city. (retorical question)

That is FOR SURE!!!! :lol2:

I have not worked as a traveling nurse in NYC, but I lived there and was a staff nurse at New York Presbyterian (Cornell Medical Center) for a couple years. My advice:

1. Be careful with housing. NYC includes all 5 boroughs so if you want to live specifically in Manhattan (which I would definitely recommend) you need to specify that. Most areas of Manhattan are pretty safe but there are dangerous areas in many of the other boroughs so be choosy about your housing.

2. I found the med/surg units at Cornell to be horrendously staffed (9 patients is standard at night) I cannot speak for other units. Travelers on my unit also told me that they found Cornell to be a difficult place to work. I have heard amazing things about Hospital for Special Surgery, and mixed reviews about NYU.

Good luck! NYC is a one of a kind experience!
