Hi everyone,
I work in a small, long term facility that houses mostly psych patients. I have been at this facility basically since graduating about 9 years ago. I love LTC and for the most part, my job. I feel I sold myself sort by staying so long. I have been given the oppportunity for advancement, butI just don't feel up to par with my technical skills. We don't insert IV's, we don't have trach patients and we don't do vents. We don't even have a foley in the building at this time. I am looking for somewhere to gain hands on skills. All I can find are refresher courses which cost about a grand and last weeks or a refresher class thru Kane that is about 6 hours long and $300.00. I have tried to find a part time job in a more acute environment, but they all seem taken back by my lack of "hands on". Can anyone offer advice? Should I do the Kane or a full refresher?

I know that there are 2 community colleges near me that offer critical care courses for RN's, they are 1-2 semesters long and include classroom time and clinical time. They also offer peri-Op courses, which are 2 semesters. First is classroom and the second is all clinical. Thats a great place to learn some skills. Have you checked your local CC's?

I feel your pain my friend, I myself have worked in psychiatric settings ever since i became an Rn, but to be well rounded I think one needs to acquire some other experience in other areas of practice. I actually had to transfer to a medsurgical setting after about 13 years of working in psychiatry and believe me its another world out there. That might the route that you have to take, transfer to another floor..good luck with your plans

What is Kane? Are you in PGH area? If so PM me.
I would look into whatever is cheapest or gives you the best re education. Some times local colleges have the refresher and will get you a job in their hospitals and might pay for it.
Do you want to leave your LTC for another that is more skilled?

First of all, if you love what you do don't feel that you sold yourself short. You are one of the lucky ones.
Do you have a local rescue squad who would let you ride with them?

Here's one more opinion....
Most anyone can give a shot, insert a foley, hang an IV. It takes a different kind of person to be able to effectively deal with psych patients. If you like what you do.....
