Want to get into NI as soon as I can!

Hello! I have an ADN, 2.5 years experience in critical care settings, and 5 months experience in long term care. I have decided to get into nurse informatics and want to get out of the nursing home setting as soon as I can to prevent losing my skills.

My long term goal is to get my bachelors in the next two years, a graduate certificate in nursing informatics, a year of practical experience and then head to the general Boston, MA area (I'm currently in Indiana). Many of the jobs I see listed for that area seem to want more experience than one year, and I keep reading that many people have learned informatics on the job. I wonder if anyone has suggestions for how I can move from my nursing home job to a clinical hospital setting that focuses on informatics so I can have more experience when the time comes for me to move. Understand I have no training in NI at this time, and will be going to school to work towards getting my NI certificate. Is there some sort of junior position in NI that I can start in?

Thanks!

If I remember correctly last year there was a horrible slump in this industry/job market that made it hard all over the US to secure a position.

Well 2010 was definitely a lot better than 2008, and 2009, at least for me. I think 2008 early 2009 was really bad. Well, as a consultant those 2 years were rough. Prior to that finding 6 months assignments extended to longer periods was easy. 2008 hit, and most places were looking for 3 month contracts at most. Then 2010 came along and I guess the meaningful use push made every hospital want to hire people back, but the only thing i noticed along with friends is that employers were now being more selective in terms of experience, and even though there were plenty of gigs around, the specifics required made it challenging to get jobs. Of course, I'm sure epic consultants never felt the stagnation. :smokin: Anyway, I realized that on my post i meant to say, "last year", but you got that

the hardest challenge and peev is the silo effect.

the silo effect is what we are experiencing with our implimentation now matthew. we are moving from a legacy system to a new one, and the installers all have their own module and know those very well but may not know about other modules too well. been an interesting ride to say the least. it's hard for us to wrap our heads around the whole picture getting it in bits and pieces!

Matthew, welcome to allnurses. Thanks for the leads. I work in informatics coding and reviewing Medicare charts. Looking to break into computer program Informatics. You gave me a path To go down by looking at vendors . I've talked with some reps and they mentioned that at times the companies are looking to hire nurses to be an educator on a particular product. This might be a lead also.

Canchaser, I am going back to school in August for my HIM bachelor's, starting with a coding cert, with my ultimate goal to get into informatics down the line. Anyway, would you mind if I PM'd you about your coding experience and your thoughts on that?
