Waiting lines for UW(wis.) applicants?

First of all I wanted to say, "thanx to all of you that take time to answer my posts!" Any how, I'm graduating from UWSP this May with a BS degree in Health promotion ! !!! I really want to continue my education by getting a BS in nursing. I am looking to get into one of those 2nd BS degree programs in WI. However, I have heard stories of huge waiting lines. I already applied to UWM(milwaukee) and am awaiting a response. Do other states have this problem?

I am afraid that UWM will accept me in their undergrad program to complete my few prereqs that need to fufill(micro, patho and maybe a different anatomy class)....and then throw me on a waiting list for the nursing program!

I also heard that if you don't have a 3.0 or higher, it is often hard to get accepted into the 2nd BS programs. My GPA of 2.90 isn't quite stellar however I am a black male....not to pull the race and gender card but, I hear that males are encouraged to apply and perhaps being a minority could help??

In wisconsin pretty much every technical college will have a waiting list. But every university will not. It is either you get in or apply next semester for universities. Good choices to look into will be UW madison, UW milwaukee, UW Oshkosh, and UW Eau Claire. Most schools won't base acceptance based on your overal GPA. They will determine your GPA by your science classes (A&P, micro, basic biology and your chemistrys), basic english, basic psycology and some elective courses. I know that the cut off to get into our nursing class is around a 3.35 or something in the lines. If worse comes to worse you could take some classes over to raise the GPA. :o

Well good luck if you have any additional questions just continue post

PS If you already have a bachlors degree you might want to look into accelerated programs. You can get your BSN in one year here is a link about UW oshkoshs accelerated program. to see what it is like

If you are willing to move, I know Oakland U and Wayne State in MI use some of the prereq classes to determine your GPA. They just require you have a bachelors degree. Also, in Philly will take you if your last 60 credits are a 3.0 or above.

Call the schools and ask their requirements.

I haven't heard of any significant wait lists for the UW. I'm on the wait list for MATC and we were initially told 3-4 years to start clinicals but they have since added a night track to allow more students per semester. I have a BS in Public Health from UW-Eau Claire and at one point tried to apply for a second BS at UW-Madison. The University is very strict on granting second Bachelor's. The second degree has to be vastly different from the first. My first degree was environmental and public health and the school said I couldn't pursue a second degree in geographic information systems. At the time I was researching, the UW wouldn't grant financial aid (loans or grants) to second bachelor's students. They suggested I pursue graduate study instead of a second undergraduate degree.

I think many of my issues were specific to UW-Madison because it has such a strong graduate school. You may not encounter as much resistance at the smaller UW's.

Good Luck!

I am at UW Eau Claire.

There is no waiting list. All determined by GPA. 40 students admitted each semester. GPA cutoff was 3.51 last semester, and 3.59 the semester before.
