Same here playing the waiting game. I'm Ashley by the way :)

Hi life is beautiful! I was about to send you a PM about Pharmacology class and I saw you started a thread and thought I'd give you tips on Pharmacology as well.

My professor was Deanne Rix for RNSG 1301, and quite frankly I liked her. I passed her class with a B. She gives quizzes every week, and don't arrive late or you will not be able to take the quiz! There are also Drug Cards that are due there, but she'll let you know how they will be filled out. Although it sounds like a lot, it really isn't plus Drug cards are like 10% and quizzes are 10% of the total grade and since they're easy, they can really help you out with your grade. She reads off the powerpoint, and doesn't have much to add to them. Sometimes I wished she just let us go home and read the book ourselves. However, a classmate told me that she reviewed the powerpoints carefully and that it helped her a lot. It just depends on your style of learning.

Don't focus too much on the physiology part of the drugs (do know the basic **** about the drugs such as how antidepressants work, just get a basic idea). Instead, focus on adverse effects, side effects, drug/food interactions, special precautions (such as you can't drink grapefruit juice with statins). Basically focus on everything that could harm the patient, and you'll be fine. I found it easier to remember by comparing the drugs with the prototype drug, since they all have similar actions etc.

I heard Professor Rich is a tough grader, but I could be wrong. I've never met her or spent a day in her class. However, after I took my final in the computer lab, I saw people in Rich's class anxious and talking about their grades. They got 40s, 50s and 60s. Keep in mind you need a 75 in Pharmacology to get into the program.

Pharmacology is a really difficult class by itself, so I would try to avoid any professors that make it even tougher. That's my advice!

If you take Rix, you don't need MyNursingLab. And she let classmates use the older (and cheaper) edition of the required textbook.

FOR THE MATH EXAM:

The eDose program really helped me a lot for the required math test (which you need an 80 or 90 to pass). However, I highly suggest you pick up Calculating with Confidence. That book has quite literally, EVERYTHING that will be on the math exam. (Keep reading to see what you will definitely need to know for the exam.) You don't need to pick up the newest edition, I used the older edition (which was like $6) and I did great on my math test. The reason I liked it was because it provides step-by-step examples and shows you methods on how to solve them. Also the book is loaded with examples. Which is really helpful, because in order to get the math down, you need a lot of practice. The math test doesn't leave much room for error. Just another little tip!

The Math test in Pharmacology consists of:

- conversions like kg -> lb, oz-> mL, etc

- calculations like 'doctor orders x mg of drug, each tablet contains x mg, how many tablets will you administer?'

- medical abbreviations such as t.i.d -> three times a day

- LO AND BEHOLD. There are no drip rates. You can rest easy... for now...

WHAT I USED TO HELP ME STUDY THE DRUGS:

Aside from the textbook, I used Mosby's Pharmacology Memory NoteCards: Visual, Mnemonic, and Memory Aids for Nurses.

Honestly, it helped me a lot because it has a lot of silly illustrations that helped me memorize things such as B-beta blockers affect the heart.

Another awesome resource that I wish I had known before I went into Pharmacology is

. I love the way he lectures, and remembered his lectures very well throughout the exam. He's actually lecturing a Dental assisting class, but he explains how certain drug categories work (such as beta blockers) which really help with remembering how they function. The pharmacology test did test on how cardiovascular drugs worked.

Thank you @berryberries! Again you're awesome. I wouldn't have imagine that someone that I don't even know would be too kind to give out information about their experience/tips in such a difficult class like pharmacology. It's really appreciated to get a heads up from previous students. I know you'll be successful in the program :)

That's very kind of you to say. Thank you!

To be honest, I've also had a lot of help getting into the program by others who were already in. I felt it was right to try to help others, just like the people who helped me! Plus, I hate paying for books. I'm already crying from the thought of forking over $150+ for school supplies. ;_;

Yes everything is expensive and we must someway somehow help each other lessen the burden because after all we are aiming for the same goal. I'm already dreading with the upcoming costs on supplies and I'm not even in officially

I managed to rummage through the books, and I did find Calculating with Confidence 6th edition (the newest one)!

Here you go! Share them among classmates, and I wish you the best on the math test!

Remember to download it as a PDF :D

Omg I sure will lol thank you. I'll try to save myself some money too

Don't forget to download Nclex mastery RN and like them on Facebook. They will help too for your boards. I've been researching myself lol

Thank you berryberries for such a detail information. U r a sweetheart . Thank u so much
