Wait list... ...

Published

Hello,

I'm just wondering if anyone has had to wait the amount of time they were actually "quoted" to get into nursing school.

I have finished my pre-reqs and will apply in a few weeks at a cc, and it seems insane to me, at this time, to take 5+ years to finish an ADN. I was told today there are some spots left right now in the 2010 class.

I say 5 years and that would include the wait to start as well as what I've finished in the last year pre-req wise. I should say I am a mom in my 30's who would just love it if I could graduate before I turn 40!!!

At this point, I'm considering just taking more pre-reqs and transferring to a BSN program.

Any comments are welcome,

Thank you,

Boat

which school did you apply to

Specializes in M/S, MICU, Hospice, Homecare.

Have you thought about doing their LPN first and then doing an LPN to Rn or even an LPN to BSN at some universities after you work as an LPN for a few years? I have heard that they still have spots open for 2009 LPN class. You would need to check on this of course, because this is only hearsay. That does seem ridiculous to wait until 2010 to start nursing school. HTH

No, I hadn't thought about that, I really just want to get the ADN, and after I start working I thought I would go for the BSN.

Thanks for your reply

Hi, Boat,

I go to Schoolcraft and started in fall of 2007 so I am in the first year. I applied in May of 2006 after I finished the AP requirement. They told me Fall of 2008.

I continued taking the second AP and Micro (I had all of the other requirements for the ADN degree), but I also took all of the pre-reqs for a BSN: chemistry and org & biochemistry and developmental psych. That way, I can go right from my ADN into a ADN-BSN program.

Anyway, when I applied, I was about # 30 on the list for 2008. They will tell you what number you are when you apply, but after that, they won't tell you (as people drop out, change their mind, etc.) They told me at the time that usually about 20 people out of the 90 will have changed their minds or whatever. The letters go out in May with orientation information. I got my letter in June to start a year earlier, so I missed orientation (had to watch a video of it). I can tell you that one person was very far down on the list for 2008 (like in the 50's) and got a call the week before school starts.

Also, If you are waiting to apply when this semester's grad comes in, I would recommend you go down to the office the day the grade is posted. I believe that if they have more than one application on the same day, they go by GPA, but I could be wrong about that.

I considered the same thing about the LPN program - when I inquired, in the fall of 2005, they only take 30 students and I would have started in 2007. So it didn't make much of a difference for me - I started in 2007 anyway in the ADN program.

So, I would recommend you get yourself on the waitlist - it doesn't cost anything to apply and you can always change your mind.

By the way, I LOVE schoolcraft. The professors are fantastic, supportive, inspiring, and very quick to help you resolve problems you may be having.

Thanks,

I think that's what I'll do; just apply the day grades are posted and go from there. Someone in the women's resource center told me yesterday they are drastically changing the program in the immediate future and will us grade point like many other cc's do now. That would move me up the list.

Thank you,

Boat

I think going by GPA is a good thing. Quite frankly, if you cant get a 3.5 or better in your prereqs, you may have a lot of trouble passing in nursing school. The grading scale is higher (2.0 = 80% in nursing school) and the tests are different than most people are used to. This class we only have 3 tests worth 75 points each. You have to pass with 80% to continue on.

Anyway, Good luck to you...
