Volunteering bolster grad school application?

Published

I have read in some old threads (mainly about Georgetown since that is where I am interested) on here about having some volunteer experience on your resume/application.

Is this to add additional nursing experience? Or is it to who that you're a caring, contributing member of society?

How many people are getting some volunteer time to put down? How much do you need to make it on an application? I work a ton between 2 jobs and will have 4 years experience in Peds, PCU and ED when my application goes in. I really want to go to Georgetown and want to make my application as best as possible (I know... So just do the volunteer time it can't hurt) but if it doesn't help that much I would rather do something that would help more like retake a Stats class I got a B- in, etc.

And those that volunteer, what do you do?

Specializes in NICU.

I didn't put down anything except my work on our hospital's practice council.

Specializes in Pedi.

Georgetown is a Jesuit university. I went to a Jesuit university as well. They value volunteer work and are all about service and social justice. I would say that's why you're reading such things. I volunteer regularly... I spent several weeks/year volunteering at camp programs for families of children with life threatening illnesses and have done overseas volunteer medical work as well. You can do anything that interests you...volunteer at a Food Pantry/Soup Kitchen, become a Big Brother/Big Sister, etc. There are ample opportunities.

So you think volunteering in general is the important part even if it is not technically volunteering as a nurse?

Specializes in Emergency Room.

Avenger1 have you applied yet and what cohort are you planning on trying to start with? I have my application in right now to Georgetown for a Nov 2013 start and am waiting to see if I will be accepted. I do have some volunteer experience overseas in Brazil and Kenya but only have those two trips with one in the works to Ghana for this October. Good luck to you!

I am just beginning to gather information now and have been in contact with the admissions office. I do not think I will apply until late summer early fall. Good luck to you as well!

I have been contact with the Special Olympics to work some First Aid stations and field meets for them. Africa had to be quite the experience!
