volunteer program

Hi all, I am very interested in Psych nursing. I've been trying to find a volunteer program where I can apply for a psych related facility/unit, unfortunately I can't locate one. Anyone knows where I can volunteer in NYC? I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

In my experience, v. few psych facilities/units use volunteers because of the higher level of confidentiality, privacy, and security on psych units. I've worked in many hospitals that had psych units and had large, active volunteer programs -- but the volunteers were not placed on the psych unit(s). You may have a hard time finding an opportunity like that.

Now that I stop and think about it, I can only recall one hospital in which I've worked that allowed hospital volunteers on the psych unit, in 25 years of psych nursing.

Best wishes, though --

Well, it was a hospital in Dayton, OH -- and they no longer allow volunteers on the psych unit, anyway. Sorry!
