i have an 80 gig ipod and use a belkin tunetalk. it is a doohickey that you attach to a 5th generation ipod that enables it to make very good quality voice recordings. i really like it. i convert the recordings to mp3 and store them in my music library - easy access all the time. i can get around 4 hours of mono recording on one charge.

the one drawback is that you can hear the hard drive ticking every so often on the audio track. it isn't enough to bother me. classmates often requested copies of lectures from me and i got no complaints.
as others suggest, make sure you have permission to record. so far, my a&p and nursing instructors have been ok with it.
I love my recorder. I ride my bike and listen to the lectures. Helps me not feel guilty about fitting exercise into my busy schedule. Thanks for the "belkin" suggestion. I use a $30 recorder. Nothing fancy and I don't put it into my computer. Would love to get my ipod loaded with the lectures as it is less bulky but then it gets more complicated and the maintenance of deleting old lectures might get cumbersome. Some use a recorder as an excuse not to take notes in class. I take notes but fill in missing parts with the recorder.
