vna

Published

Hey,

I new to this site and its my first time writing. I just recently decided to change jobs. I was working on a cardiac stepdown floor in the hospital which i left to join vna. I was wondering if there is anything I need to do to prepare for this. I start on the 9th. I'm exicited and nervous at the same time bc I think i'm really going to enjoy vna. So if you guys have any advice at all would love to hear it. Are there any supplies that I should invest in?

Thanks,

Kim

You should have your own stethoscope and bp cuff. A good investment is a GPS system for your car if you don't already have it. Do some reading in the home health forum for other advice. Hope you like your new job.

Don't have much to add but good luck! "VNA" is probably the first "home health" employer I ever heard of back when I was a student. You'll learn pretty quickly what no one seems to have enough of and to carry extra. If I had a few extra bucks I might get a pulse oximeter. Maybe I'll get one for Christmas :)

i would just recommend that before you buy any equipment on your own, check with the agency first,,,,we are only "allowed" to use company issued equipment like a pulse ox.

Do they supply you with a stethoscope and BP cuff, too? In ours, if the patient does not have these items we are "S. O. L." . Perhaps the pulse ox is considered to be more diagnostic- I don't know. So many of these things are available online now at reasonable prices. You can get both pulse ox and peak flow meters for

some agencies do supply you with BP cuff and stetescope

Any agency worth working for will supply you with the necessary equipment. We do not allow our nurses to use equipment that we do not provide because of the liability associated with it- we can't guarantee that it has been adequately calibrated and is giving an accurate result.

The agencies I have worked for supplied everything but a stethoscope. My current agency gives us a pulse ox to use, the last one we had to share them. (we were not allowed to have our own, as mentioned above, because of calibration/accuracy issues)
