Video Taping Colonoscopies ???

Published

Does your department have the equipment to provide video tapes of their colonoscopies and endoscopies to patients if the patient provides a blank tape?

Does your department allow video taping the monitor during a colonoscopy or endoscopy as some obstetrics units are now allowing video taping of birthings?

Some of the more progressive hospitals/clinics in the US have provided videos if the patient provides a blank tape for quite some time now. Our hospital wasn't one of them, unfortunately. However, until just recently our hospital did allow me to bring my own video camera and tape and allowed video taping the monitor during the scope. The new head nurse has decided to no longer allow this which is why my gastro is agreeable to our doing my future scopes at this new facility and I am actually looking forward to my next scope (except for the doggone prep, of course).

Wahaha... that is sound difficult:nono: . In that case, u have to handle the video record along the procedure. I think better if u ask for computer and connect it to the endoscopic monitor. U can not focus on the assesment if u r busy with it. Unless somebody accompany u during the procedure. If like me here, am may not able to do that, because me and doctor are one by one. then the picture capture remote is close with us. while the computer for procedure recorder, we will turn it on before the procedure begin and turn it off as soon as we are finish. But it is still a good idea by using a video recorder to capture d endoscopic pics, i actually don't have an idea to do like that:mad:

I am happy to see that you were able to get this issue resolved. I can understand the prohibition on video taping due to liability issues (but wouldn't a sharp lawyer say to the jury "the hospital knew they had a problem, but chose to prohibit taping rather than to solve the problem!"). However, I can not understand why they would suddenly refuse to do a colonoscopy without sedation on a patient that has had colonoscopies without sedation before. Sedation has its risks, however small, and if, God forbid, something bad were to happen, the policy of requiring sedation would be indefensible.

I'm not sure what has prompted these changes, to my knowledge the Endo department head is the same person who granted me permission but there is a new "head nurse" and she was the one who informed me of no more video taping. Interestingly in the past there have been just the gastro and a nurse for procedures and this last time policy has also changed regarding staffing and now requires the gastro, a procedure nurse and a procedure technician. This hospital doesn't have the equipment to provide videos, my understanding is that it requires something like a $5000 investment to provide the necessary equipment to do so. Since my gastro suggested and I'm more than agreeable its not a problem we will just do my scopes at this new facility where they will have the equipment to provide a video of the procedure. Actually, I think my gastro rather likes the idea of having her own video of the procedure as well as I like having a copy. She was always in favor of our taping my scopes.

It is better if u ask ur head of department in order to confirm either it was true o not. That should be no problem since it doesn't cause any problem o difficulty there. Even so, since there's still no clear voice and order u to stop, juz carry on with it. ;) em... u r right, dat equipment is really high cost, but the outcome is so satisfactory. having dis kind of recorder is making our task easier. usually we r keeping the pics inside our computer memory if we r not doin recording. so that our gastrologist can refer to it later and it can always be shown to other specialist if they want to refer d pt to other department, especially the surgeon. isn't it great?!

Yes, this imaging and recording technology is really a fantastic addition. I've heard they can even "film" inside the abdomen during laparoscopic surgery, I assume w/video type technology.

yup, i saw that one once when we were called to do d case in OT. however, d one they r using is only showing the outer of the colon not inside as we do. dat 1 we also can see on TV. wah... d technology now a day is getting marvellous. don't know what will b in d future. 4 me, i really love dealing with computer, dat's y when our head told us dat we r going 2 have computer recording, am d 1 who is very eager. actually, it is not juz make our task getting easier, but it also can make us enjoy with out job. hahhaaha...:D

I've been reading about CT Enterography use for investigating the small intestine for Crohn's disease and it is fascinating and exciting to learn of the advances in being able to investigate "the dark continent" (the small intestine) so much more clearly and thoroughly. 21-25 May is Digestive Disease Week 2006 in Los Angeles, California and it will be interesting to see what new advances are in the works for gastroenterology!!

CT Enterography? Wah! i never heard about dat! so i must look forward into it:eek: . sound so interesting Crohnie... u have Digestive Disease week in ur place and we don have it here. if i can... i want to go there. i also want to see. may be they r going to introduce some advance and interesting stuff out there. wah... so poor me:sniff:

I sent you a PM (Private Message) here, Loz. I hope you don't mind. The URL for Digestive Disease Week is

Wow! that is quite a lot. There's must be so many latest topic been discuss. I really interested in hepatology, because am not really good in it, so many things that i have to learn about especially in the ERCPs procedure. frankly, am really weak here.
