Video Taping Colonoscopies ???

Published

Does your department have the equipment to provide video tapes of their colonoscopies and endoscopies to patients if the patient provides a blank tape?

Does your department allow video taping the monitor during a colonoscopy or endoscopy as some obstetrics units are now allowing video taping of birthings?

perhaps they have their own reason. anyway, actually we do, we even provide dvd/cd for patient for endoscopic prcedure, if our patients requesting. however, your area maybe not allow it as to cover the client privacy or what ever for client's good. :nono:

Thank you, Loz. Our hospital is just now progressing to DVD/CDs in radiology but not to Endoscopy yet.

I do not remember the setup for my EGD (It's hard to observe much when your head is tilted back towards the ceiling), but I do know there was no recording device (VHS or DVD) by the monitor for my colonoscopy. I will definitely ask about making a recording for my next endoscopic procedure.

I have worked in 3 different endo depts. and have never had the equipment to record. We give the pictures to the patient though. It's funny the reaction, some people really want to see the pictures and some are completely grossed out.

yea... u r juz right! some of d people really don't care about it, but some of them r so eager to see what has happen inside. that's y, we r only provide the CD/DVD's copy for those who request 4 it. otherwise, it's juz a big waste. am i right? hewever, 4 d picture, we will always attach with the result document, but, it juz 4 our future references. but if our patient want it, we will give them another copy.

We've got the newer Olympus system, the Docs do their dictation on the computer right in the procedure room & it spits out a 2 copies of the procedure report/MD orders (1 for the doc), a letter to the reffering doc, 2 copies of the patient report (1 for pt, 1 for the chart) which includes the procedure results, patient instructions & pics. It's really nice.

wow that does sound like a neat system giRNfl

This is the best setup, from my (a patient's) viewpoint. There is no substitute for written information that can be taken home and studied, and kept for future reference. Written information is especially important when the patient is recovering from amnestic/sedative drugs. The current policy of encouraging the patient to have his family (and/or driver) present for the oral report has a number of faults:

1. The family's ability to understand the report may be inadequate.

2. The patient may be uncomfortable discussing medical details in front of family members.

3. The patient may be uncomfortable with the idea of family members seeing him under the influence of drugs that reduce inhibitions. Personally, I would rather have my family see me naked than see me with altered mental status.

4. The patient should not be encouraged to give up his right to privacy under HIPAA just because it saves the doctor and hospital some time (money).

wow! That is really sound great. Having that kind of stuff really make our task easier. sooner, if we want to look 4 d previous result of the patient, just click search on the computer and it will appear ;) now we are starting with our new olympus endoscopic ultrasound. this one is also interesting, but i think we will seldomly use it. in the other hand, the operation is also quite complicated. we also connect it to d computer and can be record into CD/DVD. but:nono: ... for me using the ordinary endoscope is better and clear rather than ultrasonic endoscope. what do think?:uhoh3:

I'm all for the new equipment that provides pics and report w/copy for patient if requested. Frankly, I want more than pics I want to see the entire event from entry to withdrawal. We have a new facility that opened last September that is all digital imaging and no matter the procdure the patient walks out after the procedure w/CD in our grubby little mitts. Of course, at that point the report isn't included. The Endoscopy unit isn't finished yet and is being "furnished" now with the gastros intending to provide the latest and greatest and I'm actually looking forward to my next colonoscopy if there will be DVD instead of just still pics CDs.

Just think, if something shows up during the scope that indicates surgery is needed the surgeon can just view the CD/DVD and the patient escapes another prep and scope!!!!! Hallelujah! I'm all for avoiding as many scope preps as possible!!!

Hahaha...:lol2: u r right! at least we can spare our time. Anyway, I think having CD recording is also not bad, coz some people will preper to have CD, rather than DVD. But, it is good that u there, give the CD for each patient after their procedure done. But here... we only provide 4 those who r requested. for ur information, having procedure in Brunei, who r Bruneian local is totally free of charge. So if they really want to have it, they must bring along their empty CD/DVD ;) , at least they r spend something in this.:monkeydance:
