Very bad background

Nurses Career Support

Published

I got my CNA license two months ago and I have had a few interviews. My problem is I have been fired from my last job as a truck driver about a year ago for too many speeding tickets. No other trucking company would touch me because of the speeding tickets. I made good money and since I haven't been able to find a job I foreclosed on my house, lost two cars, have many unpaid bills and will file bankruptcy. I also filed workmans comp on my previous job for a shoulder injury. During one of the interviews I was told they were going to do a background check including a mvr check, credit history, and employment references. So I basically have no chance. Also they asked about if I ever got injured on the job and I had to say yes (another red flag, making me feel like a workman's comp abuser). I want to continue to go to school and get my LPN and then RN. Another negative is that I'm 40 years old. I always wanted to become a nurse but failed to make the cut for the nursing program at NAU and graduated with a Bachelor's of General Studies. I feel its been too long ago to do an accelerated program and there is a 3 year wait at the colleges to get into the ADN program but only a one year wait for LPN-ADN students. Will it be a waste of time to continue schooling with this bad history? Will someone give me a chance?

You should try to do something about employment between now and the end of nursing school. There are places that will hire a CNA that is less than stellar. Not the best of places, but a job nonetheless. You need to keep looking. You can also look for a private duty case and hope you can convince someone to hire you on a trial basis. Get someone for a reference, pastor or someone who knows you well. I would not say that you would have any more problems in nursing than in any other line of work, but the school bit can be daunting. You have to do well academically along the way and you know that. Good luck.
