on the verge of failing!

Published

Im in my first semester of nursing school and on the verge of failing! I'm wondering if others are going through the same issues. We've started with Nursing 1 and Pharm. The questions on the tests are worded as if it were the boards. Clinicals and labs aren't included in our grades, but if we don't do well in clinical and have a good grade they can fail us. Is that the norm? Our prereqs were Anat and Phys 1 and 2, Psychology, Soc,. and Math. I study and study and study. I'm making myself sick with worry. Our instructors have given us test taking tips and I feel confident after every test, but when grade time comes around it's not good. Does anyone have any advice..opinions?:crying2:

Have you identified what specifically it is in your classes you struggle with? I would set up a one-on-one meeting your instructors to get their feedback and see if they have some advice for what your problem areas are and what you can do to improve

What you say about clinicals not getting graded but can fail you out of a course is true. Get the fundamentals success or test success books. Its not too late. Practice the test questions in the books that focus on the topics for your next test. I hope this helps.

I recommend you meet with your instructor and/or hire a tutor to help you get on track. Don't struggle alone and hope you can figure things out on your own. Use whatever resources your school provides (e.g. tutors).

Wording tests as if they're boards are they only sort I've ever heard of (going back 26 years). That's to help you get ready for boards from the get go. Talk to your instructor :) She will have the best info about you personally

Hang in there! I feel you! Have you tried using Reviews and Rationals by Mary Ann Hogan, it made a big difference in my scores, it comes with a 500+ NCLEX style questions, with rationals to the answers...

Yes, most if not all nursing schools will fail you if your performance in clinicals is bad even if you pass the theory...students are considered not safe if they perform poor in clinicals...

I'm in my first semester, as well, most of the exam questions are nclex style questions. Although it is the first semester, they still need to prep us for the boards, as that is what will ultimately pass us as nurses. My fundamentals class is based off of the average of 4 tests, although we have many pass/fail assessments and clinical care plans that are due. If you do well on your tests, but fail even 1 assessment or care plan then you are out of the program, and vice versa, if you pass all assessments but having a failing test average than you are out as well. I think the worst thing you can do is make yourself sick with worry, although easier said than done. I've been doing well in school, if this helps at all; I keep up with the readings, and study the powerpoints before the exam and re-read the sections in the book that are in the powerpoints, so I get a better grasp on that information. I don't let myself get worked up before a test, I just focus on the fact that I will do good and tell myself that. Good luck!

Well said, Kjm84!

Please meet with an academic counselor.

Do not try to figure it out on your own.

Trust me. I know.

Make an appointment today!!

Also, get an NCLEX book and do the practice tests. Don't be discouraged by what you get wrong. Read the rationales!!!

When you read the rationales and see why you got the question wrong, you may be very very surprised at what you learn.

Good luck!

I feel you OP all i have left is finals, and i've done relatively good up until now, i did great in clinicals and everything too, but one bad test grade has brought my score down significantly basically on my final in my health assessment class i can only miss 16 points any more and i fail!!! so if i even get a 63/80 i fail out of the class and have to wait a year to take it again! so needless to say im freaking out...i've talked to my teachers, changed my study habits and its helping but im still freaking out...1 pt could mean the difference between pass and fail but im studying my butt off until then...

Thanks for the encouragement! Ive made an appointment with the instructors. I have to pull my grade up 7 points with two tests and a final left. Does anyone think this is possible?

Stop panicking and breathe! Take a little time to de-stress and then make a new plan of attack.

Meet with your instructor to pin-point the areas where you are having trouble. Re-evaluate your study plan and meet with a tutor. Also meet with a guidance counselor as I am sure your school have programs available to get help.

I would also recommend getting some NCLEX exam review materials to review (buy some cheap of Amazon or go to your local library)

It is not too late to turn it all around. Most of all you have to stay positive - You can do!
