Has anyone utilized VANEEP? I am currently doing my pre-reqs for entering the RN program in the spring. It's really strange @ the VA that I work at. There dosen't seem to be many people taking advantage of such an awesome program! I'm just praying that the funding holds out long enough for me to get enrolled!

Vaneep is a program you could qualify for after working one year full-time.There are a lot of hoops to jump thru and timing is critical. You need to obtain unconditional acceptance in a nursing program and get your degree within 2 years. Your plan of study must be full-time and to be accurate and sometimes it is hard to get a school advisor to commit to your obtaining your degree on a Vaneep time line. They pay your schooling with a cap at about 22,000 for tuition, books and fees. Here is the best part ,they pay you your salary for attending school and you only work on your school breaks. This is all I have learned so far and believe it to be true.I am in process of finalizing my application for the Feb. 1st deadline. Hope this helps.

God Bless,Deb

p. S. after 1 year of full-time service you still qualify if you change your status to part-time.

It is very true. The key word here is time. Get your application in on time/early. Talk to school advisors early. Don't expect a quick answer regarding your VANEEP application. I got my application in during the first 2 weeks of the cycle and still didn't get an answer back until 3 days ago. If you can refrain from jumping off a bridge while you wait to hear if your application has been approved, the program is definitely worth the anxiety. You have to work at the VA for a year before you can apply for this benefit and after you finish school you must commit to a period of up to 3 years of service. Good luck Debo. Please let me know if you need any moral support or if you have any questions.

Hello Futurenursy,

When was the first part of the cycle for fed. deadline? In other words how long did you wait? My education coordinator was not very encouraging last time I talked with her.She said my program for ARN was too many credit hours at 72 and other programs only need 60 credir hours. This is my 2nd attempt, last one was waylaid because of misunderstanding on total work hours and job status. I am goind to apply to another program for back-up.I would do the 1st 2 years of a 4 year RN on my own the apply for VANEEP for the last 2 years. I really need the save pay status.

What program are you accepted to? Congratulations by the way!!!! Did you hear how long you pay-back is? Did your school go over the Vaneep budget for tut ion and books?

God Bless, DebOhttp://images.allnurses.com/smilies/Copy%20of%20wink.gif

Hi Debo,

For the Spring semester that I am starting, the deadline was October 31st. I didn't hear from them until 5 months later. I was told that it never takes this long but that department that takes care of this is really bombarded with applications. So definitely get your stuff in as early as you can and look for other alternatives. I am not sure what the limit for credits is but I think 60 might be right. Your service time is calculated according to the number of credits they reimburse. My school was extremely helpful and was willing to sit down and pull together figures as requested. Let me tell you, it wasn't easy. I would def. suggest you complete as much as you can on your own and try to only leave 60 credits outstanding. But what the heck, apply, see what they say. If they deny you because you have too many credits you can reapply after you have completed a few additional classes. I do appreciate the good tidings. I'm sure gonna need them. Good luck to you too. Let me know how it goes.

Hello all,

Im in visn 10 in cincinnati, ohio. My application for the vaneep was sent Friday 7/10/09. I am due to start school August 24th. My education department said my paperwork looked good and didnt see this as being a problem. She said it takes 30-90 days to hear back from New Orleans. I am pushing it though bc i start in 5 weeks.

Does anyone have any idea or experience on how long it takes to hear back once your application has been sent? Ive heard so many different things at my facility....weeks, months..

Thanks

Hey WaitingLPN,

I sent my application in early and didn't hear back from them until 1 week before school was to start. It seems that in the recent cycles they have seen a huge growth in the number of employees requesting these funds so it has created an extensive amount of work for the person in charge of processing the paperwork. I'm not sure if they have hired additional support staff by this time or not, but it would definitely appear that it is needed. There is really no rhyme or reason to this stuff and you can hear a different opinion from every single person you speak to. All I can say is, cross your fingers, your toes, your eyes......................(LOL) and hope all is well with your paperwork so that there are no unnecessary delays. Good luck. Let us know the outcome.

hey futurenursey,

at our visn our open seasons had been closed for 9 months and then they terminated the program temporarily. this has been the first open season in almost a year for us. with the termination, they explained to us they were so backed up on a national level that this applied to all vas. so as far as i know this is the first open season in some time. i hope this speeds things up. everything is crossed for sure lol! the va way for sure, hurry up and wait!

thanks for your input on this situation. i will keep you posted! and if anyone else has any info i'd appreciate it.:wink2:

I am from VISN 12 Edward Hines VA and my application was submitted 7-1-09. I received acceptance into the program on 8-3-09. I hope this helps

Hey CS1827,

I would love to know what type of magical stardust you have that you are hiding from the rest of us. LOL! I think I have come to realize that sending your application in early probably gets it a starring role at the bottom of a pile somewhere. I must say the wait was well worth it. Congratulations and good luck to everyone as you embark on your academics and careers in nursing.
