Hey everyone!

I've created a forum for 2011 Fall Prespec. Nursing =]

I hope to discuss housing, transportation, books, etc on this forum. ^^

I was recently admitted to ANP/GNP specialty.

Please introduce yourself! ^_^

thanks nikki!! will look into that.

where have you been looking?! i wonder if they really need to be all white. i volunteer at the children's hospital at vandy and all of the nursing students that i see are wearing sneakers or those tone-up shoes, since they say they're super comfy if you're on your feet all day. i'm actually about to go in now, so maybe i can pull one aside and ask how strict they are about "all white leather". i'll keep you posted.

if there are any male nursing students out there, sorry for talking so much about shoes!!!

Hi Nikki164-On behalf of the male students, no worries about shoe-talk. We wear them too :D

Hi Nikki,

I saw your posts on the yale gepn forum too, so I am wondering if you are deciding between yale and vanderbilt and what your thoughts are. I have visited both schools and really liked them both. They are very different is some respects, but the differences are positives rather than negatives for each school. Please let me know what you think. I'm relatively new to allnurses site as a member, so I don't know how to send personal messages yet, but you can probably send me a message back if you want, rather than post on this forum.

Thank you guys for the options! I got emails from Vanderbilt that gave me more information on housing and a roommate search. It seems like a lot of students from last year live at 20th and Grand so I've been looking into it (soo nice but a little bit on the pricey side). I haven't been to Nashville at all yet but I'm definitely going to come in May.

Have you guys signed up to the roommate search on facebook yet??

hey guys, i'm driving down next week to look at apartments again... i'm going to be making a list with everything i see and what not... if anyone wants it when i'm done, let me know :)

I'd love if you would be willing to share what you learn. Thanks!

Hey Kate I'd also love to look at any notes or kind of list you make while apartment hunting. I'm moving there in Aug with my boyfriend but we're from California so I don't know if I'll be able to make it out there before then so apartment hunting purely by phone and internet will/has been interesting.

@TGills and Kate. I currently live in Nashville 2 blocks from Vanderbilt medical center. I can definitely give you advice. Bellvue and Hermitage are quite far since there is a lot of traffic on those routes to get there.. especially Bellvue since you would need to travel down Hillsboro Pike for the majority of getting from Vanderbilt to Bellvue (reverse direction, you can hop on the 40, but it still takes a bit over 20 minutes without any traffic.. any trust me.. there is alwayssss traffic).

You do not have to travel down hillsboro pike to get to from bellevue. every single morning I take 40 to 440 and get off at the west end exit- much faster. There's also about 3 other ways to get to and from vandy from bellevue. without traffic, it takes me less than 15 minutes to get to school.

no, you don't wear scrubs to class. for class, look put together. no sweats, rarely jeans.. and if you do wear jeans, make sure they're not ripped. scrubs are for when you start doing clinicals in the hospital. you wear dark blue. i think the white are for baptist or st. thomas.

White scrubs are for St. Thomas- yes they suck, but I had an excellent clinical experience at STH that more than made up for it. Regarding the dress for class-- most anything goes, including gym clothes. I know plenty of people that show up to class in gym clothes daily. So long as you are relatively clean and aren't letting anything hang out that shouldn't, you'll be fine. It does tend to be absolutely freezing in the lecture hall though, so even in summer you'll see folks bringing in jackets to class. Regarding white all-leather shoes...just suck it up. At the end of a long day in clinicals, you won't care what you look like, and I would strongly suggest that you stick with all-leather uppers because the first time you spill something like urine, vomit, or blood on your shoe and it soaks through that one little patch of mesh....you'll be cursing yourself. Keens, Nurse Mates, Sketchers, and Dansko's are all popular shoe choices. Navy blue scrubs with the patch sewn onto the left shoulder are standard attire everywhere except STH. They'll also tell you to wear a white undershirt beneath the scrubs, but honestly this is not evenly enforced among clinical faculty. The only time you'll really need to have nice business casual clothes is for picking up your patient assignment the day before clinicals, and also for some community health activities.

Sorry for the short and choppy answers here- please let me know if any of you have more questions for me. MaineMan88, Medvision, and Mammac5 are also Vandy students here on AN.

Hi Everyone,

I have been accepted into the NMW track and am in the midst of making my decision. My largest concerns include the travel required, the cost (I am assuming the travel significantly increases cost!), and the ease of getting a CNM job without nursing experience or a BSN. I was hoping some of you might share your thoughts on why you choose the pre-speciality program and any reflections on the above concerns! Thanks in advance.

Im also coming from CA in early august and dont think I will make it out there before then so everything will need to be done via internet. Any advice for good apartment search websites?? Thanks and looking forward to meeting you all!!
