Vanderbilt Pre-Specialty Applicants 2014

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Hey everyone! I couldn't find this thread anywhere so figured that I would start one for all of us who applied to Vanderbilt's Pre-Specialty Entry program (for non-RNs) this fall. I applied for the PMHNP specialty. What about you?! :)

kgrl,

I'm not exactly sure how FNP works since it is not my specialty, but I know they try to keep the clinicals fair for everyone and give you a mix of placements both near and far. Also since I don't know how many different clinical placements the FNP track rotates through, I can't really answer your question about moving to the town. Sorry I wasn't much help!

What do you mean? The only acute care specialty track that pre-specialty students can apply to is adult acute care, which requires you to stay on campus for the whole program. Does that answer your question? Or are you asking about the acute care specialty tracks for direct entry students (RNs with BSN)?

Thanks, tph731!

I remember they talked about this at the open house in the fall, but I didn't write it down.

Does anyone know what the average salary for a pre-speciality student coming out of VUSN? (Obviously I know this depends on whether you are in a rural/urban area and what your specialty is but does anyone have a general estimate?)

Specializes in Mental Health.

I don't think it's possible to give a general estimate since salaries vary widely depending upon your specialty, geographical location, ability to negotiate, etc.

Just got wait listed for PMHNP, I figured that would happen because I didn't send in an application until the last week of January. Anyone, I was just wondering if anyone has already moved off of the PMHNP wait list or if anyone knows about how many people are on it?

The open house talked about the average salary for all NPs nationwide, not just grads. They said that those NPs making less than the average generally live in an area with a lower cost of living. Obviously the average salaries vary by years of experience:

1-5 years: $87,650

6-10 years: $95,170

11-15 years: $95,880

16-20 years: $98,210

21-25 years: $104,100

I also remember hearing that virtually no one gets hired in for less than $65k after graduating from Vandy, but I don't have the exact reference for that.

Same. Do you know where the form we are supposed to fill out to keep our spots on the wait list is?

I found it at the bottom of the application page, under all of my "submitted" forms. So, login in, open the application itself, and then scroll to the very bottom. Hope that helps!

Got it. Thanks

So have you guys all heard something? I am still waiting to hear, and admissions keeps giving me the run around...I am guessing I did not get in, but it would be professional and courteous of them to let me know. Their unprofessional attitude and lack of help has been endlessly frustrating. was my top choice, its sad it had to go this way.

Because admissions decisions are made by the specialty faculty and then conveyed to the admissions staff, the admissions office likely doesn't know when late admissions decisions will be made any more than you do. They're likely not being purposefully evasive; they're just waiting on the faculty to finalize their decisions process, which could be held up by any number of things. If you are in the position of needing to decide between another school's offer of admission and a potential acceptance from Vanderbilt before a looming deadline, you might try sending a courteous email to your specialty director to verify that they've received your application, let them know your situation, and ask when you might expect to hear about their decision. As the deposit deadline at is April 2, I would assume most acceptance letters have already been sent, but I wouldn't discount the possibility of a late acceptance, particularly to less competitive specialties.
