Vanderbilt Nurse Residency Program - Winter 2013

U.S.A. Tennessee

Published

I just mailed off my packet to Vanderbilt today! I'm so nervous and really hoping to get an interview for this program. Adult Critical Care is my first choice. I graduated in May 2012 with my BSN from Washington State University. I thought it would be fun to start a thread for people applying for the Winter 2013 program.

Hoping to meet other people who are applying to this program.

Nursey 86- I'm in the same boat as you. I will be coming from Oregon and have been comparing costs of driving vs flying, and what to do with my furniture. I have decided to ship my car there, if you are shipping your car I would check out Transport Reviews.com - Ratings and Reviews of Auto Transport Companies - Your Source For Finding a Quality Auto Transporter! You can read reviews there on several companies. Have you looked into freight trains? I have heard it's usually cheaper to send boxes that way vs UPS/Fed Ex. Just some thoughts :)

Have to look into that, thank you :)

Moving cross country is so complicated! I moved once before (from Los Angeles to Baltimore) and hired a moving company and drove my car cross country. The drive was doable since I had family along I-70 in Denver and Kansas to stay with, it was June with nice weather, plus my mom drove with me. This was 5 years ago and I had the company move my bed, dresser, desk, some larger paintings, TONS of boxes, all my clothing and some other stuff for around $1100 - they also did all the moving of my stuff into the truck and into the new place - which was great since the new place had lots of stairs.

I'm thinking this time around I will pay for a moving company (I actually own more nice furniture now so I really don't want to sell it and repurchase). But my plan right now is to sell my car (its 13 years old and I've got the feeling that the next thing that goes wrong will probably cost a lot) and maybe do a 2-year lease in Nashville - that way if I want to stay after the 2 years I could buy that car (and we should be making more money then) or I can be done with the lease and avoid having to get a car back to California. I want to avoid driving I-40 in the middle of January - it could be really cold with lots of ice or snow. I think it would be cheapest to do a Uhaul cross country instead of hiring movers, but January weather is just not what I want to drive a Uhaul in!

I'm thinking I will fly out mid-January (with my dog, just to make things complicated), just find a place then, stay in a motel while I look, and get a car. Sounds like a crazy two weeks before we start the program! I don't really want to spend the money to fly out before and apartment search and end up paying for a place longer then I have to. Am I crazy? Anyway, if anyone else is thinking of looking for places the few weeks before and wants to share a motel, let me know closer to January.

I'm very excited for this new adventure and meeting everyone in the program. It sounds like there are a lot of us from all over the country, so good luck everyone as you figure out your move. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving - we have lots to be thankful for.

@Saribeari- I graduated with a 4.0GPA from accelerated program and my previous degree is in Biology. My only experience prior to getting accepted was 2.5 years as lead GI technician in the local hospital here in Colorado Springs.

@cstark- If your still looking for someone to share hotel room with, I might share one with you if it works out since I haven't decided exactly when I am going to go yet. So far I'm planning on flying out, renting a car and hunting for a place. My car and my two dogs will be brought out by the significant other once I find a place.

When is everyone planning on moving? I'm torn between end of December and beginning of January. I plan on just bringing the bare basics and starting fresh out there to. My biggest stressor is trying to find a house to rent where I can keep my dogs since I have two very large dogs and one is stereotyped on most "breed aggressive" lists. I also am bringing my horse with me, but I already found a place to board her, if only houses were that easy to shop for :/

Are asn still accepted for residency preceptorship?

Are asn still accepted for residency preceptorship?

I'm pretty sure they are no longer accepted. Check the nurse residency page to be sure.

Has anyone heard back about the perioperative internship?

For those of you from Tennessee, what is your advice for areas to live? Which areas are nice? Which areas should I avoid? I don't mind a small commute to Vanderbilt (maybe 30 mins). I am just looking for a one bedroom apartment. Thank you!

Great question Nursey86, I am wondering the same thing! Also, can anyone give a estimation of what one bedroom apartments range from in Nashville?

I have family in the area and they suggest the Brentwood Area for apartments. Cost of living is not that bad and neither is the commute to the Vanderbilt main campus, about 15 minutes in good traffic.

I am curious, those of you that got accepted to the various tracks, what are the contingencies regarding you all accepting the position.... deadlines etc? Do any of you know anything about the wait list or how many may be on it?

wow this page is great!! too bad I found it late, would have used the support earlier on. Anyway I was accepted into adult medicine as well. dnt even know where to start with apartment search.

congrats to all those who were accepted, and all those on the wait list and those who didnt get in. we are all winners cos we won the nursing school battle, a job offer will come eventually.:)

I looked at apartments when I was down there in October. Private message me for more information and details :)
