Hi guys!
I would love to connect with anyone who has applied to Vandy for Fall 2010. I applied to get my BSN and then for FNP. Let me know about you! They say we won't hear back until the end of Feb!

Thank you for your insight. Time dedicated to studying will absolutely vary, it is very individualized to each student. It was simply "enlightening" to get these estimates from current students as many of us are excited about the program and speculating what our life will be like for the next couple of years. In no way should one base their commitment to their education on other's perception or a forum for that matter.
I personally anticipate the course load being equivalent to two full time jobs. Therefore I was slightly delighted to hear those students' perception of their "individulaized" work load equating 12 hrs of studytime. I was and still am planning for a great deal more of study time!
Re: TNNurseKimRN
I just got my letter TODAY for the FNP program. When I had called at beginning of March they stated that FNP is usually the last specialty to finalize their list.
Hope this helps.
Does anybody know anything about how the courses are set up online? Like are they discussion boards and just have due dates or is it live chat type things? I have had online classes that have been both ways. Just curious if anybody has heard anything about what the actual classes are like.
Is anybody planning on working while doing the NP program? Those of you who are already RNs?
Literaryfitz: Congrats!! I think I am going to work PRN. We have to relocate to Nashville and I will have to find a job so I fugured I would just start as PRN. If I stayed at my current job I would have tried to stay full time until it got to be too much. I am doing the ACNP program.
Anybody else decided what they are going to do on the work front? I am interested to know.
Celclt,
The department head of financial aid said students can get up to $69,000 a yr for tuition and living expenses, though I wouldn't want to take the full amount. I despise debt...lol! Also she said EFC scores aren't really useful at Vandy. So unless your EFC is over 70,000 (which has only happened a couple of times) you should be able to get Stafford and Grad Plus Loans. The best part was that everyone gets money in the form of a scholarship. I think average was $6-7k a yr divided amongst the total number of semesters.
Hope that was helpful!

I am going to work PRN I think. I haven't told work yet, just waiting for the right moment, but I know that at the current pace of how I work right now there would be NO WAY to stay full time doing what I do AND going to school full time. I work over 40 hours a week and take call. It wouldn't be feasible cause I would never sleep. Ha Ha!!
Nice to hear about the different financial aid stuff. I need to get on that ASAP. I am so swamped right now at work I just want to veg out when I get home. However, with this on the horizon I think I can find some motivation.
Celclt,
I completed the Fafsa and Vandy's scholarship form. The deadline for the form was March 1st and the 15th for the Fafsa. Though she did state you could submit after those dates if need be. I'm just waiting to recieve the financial aid award letter that comes in April. I'll keep you posted!

Well, I would say that studying 12 hours outside of class time is one of those, "Your Mileage May Vary" sort of deals. If studying is defined as reviewing notes, working on flashcards for pharmacology, etc. then I could concur with 12 hours. But then you've got to think about time for researching/writing papers, pre-clinicals patient preparation, writing plans of care, and reading.
I'm not trying to be discouraging to argumentative in any way; but I think a realistic idea of the time committment is vital, especially for those who my choose/need to work at a real job while also going to school. Of course, I'm thinking of those in the pre-speciality segment and I'm not sure if you are already a registered nurse.
