I would agree with progressivethinking. I would contribute at least up to the amount that they will match, which I think is 5%. Check out Paycheck Calculators | Online Payroll Calculators | Paycheck City and they give you and idea of how much your take home pay would be if you contribute to a 401k or other pre-tax benefits.
I think the 10% contribution is the best option, thanks for that recommendation :)
Jonesgeo, thanks for the link. That website is awesome, very helpful in putting it all together. My hiring process was pretty quick as compared to others from the time I completed my app, until my actual start date was a total of 2 months. I'm on M/S, days 7a- 730p.

Hi Allnurses,
My benefits package arrived and I took a glance at it. Like most on this forum I knew the VA had some great benefits, but they are much better than I could have predicted. I've never had a 401K/ TSP. We are trying to decide how much we would like to contribute to the plans considering they are pre- tax deductions. Can anyone give any insight on how they are using this plan and what are some of the pros & cons. I'm considering contributing the max (I'm 25 years of age). Any information is appreciated :)
Education Debt Reduction Program: has anyone used this program? I read in a previous post that u must apply within 6 months of hire. How long does it take before they will begin making payments?
Thanks in advance :)
