UW ABSN 2015

U.S.A. Washington

Published

Hello you all!

I'm from Seattle, and I am applying to the University of Washington to be part of the 2015 cohort for their ABSN program. I wanted to know if there was anyone else here on the same journey. Yes?

I'm applying to a few other ABSN programs around the country, too:

Duke University

Johns Hopkins University

Oregon Health and Science University

New York University

MGHIP

MCPHS University

University of Rochester

University of Massachusetts - Amherst

Emory University

I know admission to UW and the other accelerated nursing programs are pretty competitive, and I hope to give myself a shot of getting in somewhere by increasing the places to which I apply. The schools I'd really love to attend most are OHSU, Johns Hopkins and MGH.

My undergraduate GPA is 3.91, and my nursing prerequisites GPA is 3.95. I only have A&P II and Microbiology remaining, which I'll do this fall semester, in three weeks. I'm volunteering at a Cancer Clinic, which I do one day a week, and I just started a full-time job at a hospital on Pill Hill a few weeks ago. I'm pretty nervous about embarking on a new chapter.

Any other folks out there? What other schools beside UW are you applying to? Have you completed your letter of motivation?

Let's hear from each other!

spaceshuttleboy, I'm still so unsure! Both are great programs. I like NYU because it would be a great experience in an exciting city! UW I am more familiar with being in the west coast. But I'm still unsure of NYU because of the super expensive cost! 90,000+ tuition will put me into much debt. Otherwise I think I'd love a new experience in NYU. So still unsure which one I will pick if I get into both hmm.. How about you? What are you leaning towards?

lilyambers, living in NYC would be very exciting and I'm going in circles about deciding to attend NYU. I'm holding my spot there at least until UW replies. I'm trying to be reasonable and see past the lights and colors to look onto the fact that by the end of the program, with the amount I'd have borrowed, I'd owe very close to 100,000 with interest, which is very much to pay for a nursing degree. I wouldn't like to have short-term gain for long-term pain. But, I'm also believing that I can get other scholarships during school, qualify for loan forgiveness programs after school, and also pay that loan off competently with the salary I'll eventually have -- though it probably isn't wise to be foolishly optimistic.

I suppose I'm also over being in Seattle, and would like to be in a different city. But I've applied to some comparably good universities, and if any whose tuition is lower first accepts me before the end of December, I'll just go there.

spaceshuttleboy, how does one qualify for loan forgiveness programs after school? Is it through a hospital when you get your first job or a separate program? I'll be taking out tons of loans for a BSN if I get in and I can't help but feel like :no::no:.

There are tuition forgiveness programs, both federally and on the state level. They usually require working for an underserved population, or in remote locations. For nursing, it's usually a 2 year commitment for a partial repayment. It's also a great way to get set up with that crucial entry level experience, where you'll likely be doing more than you would otherwise!

Does anyone know if we should be expecting a letter or an email for notice of admission?

According to the blog at least, decisions will be mailed! Anybody know the cost of tuition?

Hey lillyambers,

The website says that the ABSN is

$8,865/quarter. I am guessing that with other fees and such, it will total about $50,000.

Sorry about the formatting! I'm not sure why that happened!

Thanks! Wow price isn't bad at all! I guess I'm comparing this to NYU where tuition is $90,000+ haha

@lilyambers: does this mean you've decided not to go to NYU?

@spaceshuttleboy Still not sure yet! Waiting for UW still, although I paid the $500 deposit to NYU just in case. I also got into another nursing school in Pennsylvania that is less than half the cost but I gave up that spot since I much prefer New York. UW though is a different story since UW is one of the top nursing schools in the country! If I get into UW I think sadly I will give up my NYU spot. Perhaps one day I shall go to New York to do my masters but better to think realistically and not have so much debt right? I just wish I could have the NY experience without the price tag... Have you heard back from other schools and decided not to go to NYU?

Yep, I've decided I'll go to the University of Rochester.
