UVM (vermont) DE-DNP Fall 2022

Updated:   Published

Hi Everyone!

I recently submitted an application for the fall 2022 Direct Entry DNP program at the University of Vermont. I am hoping to enter the AGNP track.  I went to an information session and learned quite a bit from it which I was grateful for because there wasn't too much info on the website. I was at the information session that was highly populated with many Californians ?. Has anyone else applied?

Hi there! Congratulations on your acceptance :) I also have been accepted (FNP track though) and would love to chat more about the area and University.  I added my questions below, and any help is appreciated. I am leaning towards UVM (submitted my deposit today) but still feeling a little nervous about going in that direction versus a school in Boston.

- What are some of the areas you recommend to look for housing? Do you think being within walking distance from the hospital/UVM is a must, or is driving/parking manageable?

- Have you heard from current direct entry nursing students about their overall experience at UVM? I haven't had any luck finding current students to talk to.

- Do you have any experience in regards to how supportive and communicative UVM faculty is? In regards to getting enough clinical practice/simulations, helping with clinical rotations, post-grad job search.

- How's living in the area/Burlington like year-round? I am based in Boston, and have come up to Stowe quite a bit, but only visited Burlington once and not sure what to expect.

Hey! Sorry for my delay - I have been enjoying Vermont Winter (aka, I went on a ski trip ?

In terms of housing - parking is somewhat limited at UVM, in that you may need to park in a lot that is a 10-15 minute walk from the nursing building. However, traffic never gets bad and I definitely don't think you should feel like you have to live within walking distance. The buses are pretty reliable and personally, I really like to bike commute in the Summer (I always drive when it's snowing). I think you could consider living in any of the surrounding areas. I love Winooski and it is super convienient. The New North End is also pretty popular. That said, housing is super difficult to find, so I recommend getting an early start, and maybe trying to find a place as undergrads move out in May/June. UVM doesn't provide enough housing for their undergrads, so much of the area surrounding campus is very youthful. That could be fun, but if you're older, you may want to live a little farther out. Check out UVM's off-campus housing website - some people will advertise their places specifically to graduate students: https://offcampushousing.uvm.edu/.

I did speak with a current student last year when they were in their pre-licensure year. She spoke really highly of the program. I remember asking specifically about advising and student support, and she assured me that she felt really supported. Many of the nursing faculty are friends with folks that I work closely with at the med school, and I hear really good things. I also took microbio with BSN students here, who also spoke highly of thier program.

In terms of responsiveness, I have high expectations. It's possible that my perspective is skewed a little from working at the med school, because we work really hard to support our students. But I think this is also true of the nursing school - in fact, there are some areas and programs where the med school and the nursing school collaborate, which makes me think that they function very similarly to how we function on the medical side. I have emailed back and forth with the Assist. Director of Student Services over the last couple of weeks and she has been great! She even met with me via Zoom for a half hour to answer some questions I had about the post-licensure years.

And lastly, I love living in Vermont. I moved here three years ago after living in Brooklyn for a few years, and I am so glad I did. If you love outdoor activities and nature, this is really the place to be. If you don't, I still think it is likely pretty wonderful, but obviously it doesn't offer the same abundance of city-activities that you would find in Boston. I think our food scene is growing, but I do sometimes miss food from NYC/Asheville (my home town). That said, Montreal is just an hour and a half north!

Let me know if there is anything else you would like to know!

I also have a question! Do we have to find our own clinical sites? I tried looking on the website and I cannot find anything.

Hi! I am almost certian that we do not have to find our own clinical sites. I believe I asked this question of the current student I spoke with last year, but I can't find my notes to confirm. I also had a conversation last week with the Assist. Director of Student Services, where she talked about some of the settings students work in. The way she talked about it implied to me that they assign student's sites. I would reach out directly to her to confirm! https://www.uvm.edu/cnhs/profiles/kristen-cella

Thank you so so much for responding so thoroughly! I actually have a meeting scheduled with the Assist. Director of Student Service tomorrow to go over any other questions I have, so looking forward to that. I love nature and outdoor activities (spent last weekend snowboarding in Stowe actually) so that's something I am really looking forward to being in the area. I think right now I am just feeling a little scared & overwhelmed from making such a big decision, but not really knowing anyone in the same boat. Have you been able to connect with admitted students? I was wondering if there is a facebook group or something for us to get to know each other better.

That totally makes sense! It is a big decision, but it sounds like you might really love it here! I haven't connected with any other admitted students yet. I did ask Kristen about how they connect the cohort, and she said that we could expect more information over the next few months as people make final decisions. We could make a facebook group though? I don't see one yet, but would be happy to get it started!

I imagine that there will be other folks moving here as well. Having recently gone through that move, I am more than happy to help in any way! Honestly, I am just really excited to connect with other DENP students!

Anyone else who sees this should join!
