UTMB BACC2 Spring 2012

Published

I wanted to start a thread for those applying for UTMB's 2012 accelerated nursing program. The application is open April 1-July 15. I was told invites for interviews start after the application is closed and interviews start end July-August. Does anyone have any additional information? Has anyone applied before? Know of any interview questions? Please share everything you know!!!!!!!

Good luck to everyone

Hey guys! Congrats to everyone who has gotten their acceptance emails! Y'all are in for an exciting, crazy, fast ride! :) Just a quick note that y'all might want to think about now that y'all are finding places to live. It is not always the best option to live on the island itself. As far as clinical placements go, sometimes it is better to live closer to Houston, or halfway between Houston and Galveston (Clear Lake, League City, Friendswood, etc.). The majority of the clinical placements are outside of Galveston, so you could be in for a very long drive if you live in Galveston and have to go to the med center in Houston. Also, if you want variety in your clinical placements, it might be better to live off of the island, as there are only two clinical placements on the island itself-John Sealy (the main hospital) and TDCJ (the prison). That being said, if you live on the island, you have a quick drive to the campus and that is always nice, plus it's lots of fun! Anyway, these were just thoughts I had that I wanted to share with you guys! Congrats again! And to the people who haven't heard yet-I didn't find out I was in until like a month before classes started, so there's still plenty of time!

Thanks Chewy for the info! I am still anxiously waiting for my invite- good to know there is still hope.

Also- How easy was it to meet people? I ask that because thats the main reason I want to live on the island is to be around other students...

Yeah I'm in the same boat, I want to meet ppl too so I wanted to live on the island!!

Hey guys! New to the site so I hope I'm doing this right. Just found out I got accepted into the fast bacc program at UTMB for spring 2012! Thinking about living on campus in a dorm or on the island in a fully furnished apartment, preferably with my own room, but definitely willing to live with roommates! I don't really have the ability to move stuff down with me from the Dallas area so I need something with furniture already! Let me know if you're interested and shoot me a message!

Amanda- I am (hopefully) going to move down from the North Dallas/Frisco area - if you want to go halfsies and use part of the moving truck- it can definitely be arranged!

Plus- if you want to meet up for lunch or something before the move- I am up for that too!

That might work...but what about move out time? Lol, I'm trying to get back to the dfw area after we graduate. However if you wanna talk some more, shoot me an email at [email protected] and we can go from there!

Congratulations to everyone. I had to reschedule my interview due to a death in the family. I call tomorrow to set up a phone interview as I live a 2 days drive away. What was with the Sugar and Taxes questions?

As for a place to live, one bedroom or 2 I am willing to share. Only thing is, I have 2 cats.... So if you love crazy kitties (one loveable, and one stays to herself), I am game.

Any last minute advise for the interview??

If you want to meet people, for sure, live on the island. You'll have so much fun! That being said, I know plenty of people who live off of the island who just drive in when we have get togethers on the island. You will grow so close with your fellow Bacc2 students, as you guys go through a really intense program for one year and do everything together. So even if you live off of the island, you will end up getting to know pretty much everyone in the Bacc2 program and make great friends with them!

For the interview I would say that they make you feel comfortable and are very nice, so try not to be too nervous. In my interview she had a packet with questions already made up.. they asked what led you to nursing, what do you think nurses do, a subject that was easy to grasp,a subject that gave u a challenge, do you have a support system, how r u gonna pay for school, any volunteer or activities u participated in, and 2 questions kind of asking u for your opinion, should the government pay for nursing instead of other programs, what would u do if u find yourself struggling to keep up. overall, there weren't very many questions.

Chewy-how many clinical hours/days do you do per week? When does that start?

Specializes in Peds.

Hello All!

I've been following this thread along with the traditional spring 2012, and wanted to know how many on this thread were accepted versus how many were interveiwed? I was interviewed, along with several others on Sept.9th in the first batch, however none of us have heard back yet. We should hear something by tomorrow. I saw that several of you got acceptances letters a couple of days after you interviewed, so just curious what the ratio was of interviewed vs accepted...

Did everyone on this thread get an interview?

Thanks!

Good luck to anyone still waiting!!

Hi, I recently got into the program too!! I'm so excited and can't wait to start. Would anyone be interested in making a facebook group just for our program? I figure that would be a lot easier to communicate about housing or questions about the program. I'm going to go ahead and create the group its called: UTMB BACC2 Spring 2012

Yay! Can't wait to meet yall!!

Chewy-how many clinical hours/days do you do per week? When does that start?

The clinical hours and days will vary depending on which course you are in. Most courses require that you do 6 12-hour shifts, although some courses require more shifts. The days vary depending which facility you are at for your clinical placement. If you are in a preceptorship (where you are assigned to one nurse), then you work when the nurse works. So if she works Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, then you will work those days (you can choose to opt out of working some of those days, just so long as you get your 6 shifts in by the end date for the course). Some courses will require you to be in a cohort, which is where you go to clinicals as a group of students, and those are usually just one day a week (for example, every Wednesday).

The clinicals for the first semester of school don't start until like mid to late March. So you won't be doing clinicals for the first two, two and a half months that you are in class. You will just be taking courses, doing labs, and getting adjusted to the Bacc2 program. These first two months, expect to go to the actual school about three times per week. After this, you mostly go just 1-2 times per week. Once you get into the second and third semesters, then you will pretty much immediately start clinicals as soon as you get back from the semester break. You usually have about 4-6 weeks to get all of your clinical hours in.

Hope this helps!
