Utica ASBSN Fall 2017

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hello!! Applying to Utica for fall 2017, anyone going or get accepted? Also would love information about the program from others that have went and would like to share, that would be super helpful! I'm still on the fence about it with all the negative comments I have read. Maybe it got better since the program is some what newer?

Thank you!!

at this time i am unsure with housing because i am waiting to hear back from other schools

Anyone looking for housing or going to open house in Syracuse on June 9th?? Would love to meet others accepted into the fall cohort!

Has anyone attended or planning on attending Utica in St. Petersburg? I'm a bit skeptical from the reviews I have seen.

I graduated 8 yrs ago with a BA in Economics from Vanderbilt. Did horribly my freshman year and unfortunately because of that, graduated with just below a 3.0 (2.98 to be exact). I still need to take most of the pre-reqs, so I'll try hard to do well in those. But most schools are saying they total stick to the 3.0GPA minimum thing, no exceptions. But that is just a bare minimum just to apply to even be looked at.

I sort of think that's ridiculous. It's a known fact that there are some colleges are much harder than others. I had someone in admissions at USF pretty much tell me it doesn't matter if you went to Harvard or Hodunk Community College (lol), numbers apply to every applicant.

I went through the Utica St Pete program and survived to tell the tale. When i was looking into the program I had the same concerns about the negative reviews online, but in my experience, it's always the angry people who have to go out and share their experiences. It's unfortunate that the people who were happy with their experience don't go and post their side, but it's just the way it is. As far as support from staff, most of the didactic teachers are not present on site, so support is via email, phone call, or in some cases video chat (which is my favorite, it is basically the same as sitting in a teacher's office for office hours). They tell you up front that the didactic work is online and mostly self-driven, so anyone who is surprised and upset by this didn't pay attention to the entire process.

The program is far from perfect, but guess what - every program has the same issues. Any students we talked to from other schools at clinical had the exact same complaints we had. It's not issues only at Utica, it's just a fact of life for nursing school. Schedules come out last minute, things get changed suddenly, and students just have to adapt and overcome. It's not going to suddenly change, so complaining about it endlessly really does absolutely no good.

The program is hard, but overall I'm happy with my choice. If you find a good group of friends to study with it helps a lot. When you have questions you can always ask the teachers for help. Lab teachers are helpful and will usually even help try to clarify if you don't understand a topic from a lecture class, but when it comes to specifics they'll tell you themselves to always refer to the textbook for solid answers (for example normal lab values, where it may vary slightly from one source to another). Building good relationships with the faculty is important to their willingness to help, of course. If you treat them like garbage they're far less likely to go out of their way and take time out of their days to help you understand something from someone else's class.

In my opinion, it all comes down to your attitude. If you want to have a good experience and are willing to be flexible you are much more likely to walk away with a good experience in the entire process.

Hello krissy23, I also applied for spring 2018 class.I will definitely be looking for a roommate. Are you going to Syracuse or Tampa?

i'm a student currently. DON'T COME! its a terrible school

First of all, i'm a current student and some of these things you are saying just aren't true. NOBODY comes in with a negative outlook being in a terrible school makes it that way. Utica DOES NOT tell you that you TEACH YOURSELF during admission. So they are not forthright from the very beginning and there are people here who are doing well and they will tell you the same thing. Other nursing programs AREN'T LIKE THIS PROGRAM! Other programs actually teach you and are accountable when you have issues and they address them. We had at least 5 staff members leave in our first 2 semesters. What other nursing program does that??
