UTHSC-Houston Spring 2013

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hi,

I am new to allnurses.com and I wanted to start a topic for the Spring 2013 applicants at UTHSC Houston. Where we can keep each other posted on the process as it nears. I have yet to take the HESI but i wonder if anyone else has taken it and what their score was. I will compile my GPA's later and post them on here.

Thanks for your comments

Thanks for your response it was helpful!! And I'm currently at UTA so I'm in Arlington. Ill be dropping the class today and taking it for a maymester at tcc!

Not to pry or anything, but do you have a previous degree?? The reason I ask, from experience... I have a good friend who had perfect scores on her HESI and got rejected because of some withdrawls and a few not so great grades from previously even though she retook those classes and got A's in them.... She does not have a degree and has just been taking classes through U of H and HCC.

If you have a degree, then they do not look at that. They strictly look at your prereq grades.

I don't have a previous degree:( this is my first full year at a university and I have about a years worth if credits from dual credits

Quick question for you all...how bad does it look to have a W on your transcript or to drop a class? Can anyone tell me what it would look like to UTH if I'm applying for spring semester. I have a 3.7 prereq GPA and a 4.0 science. This semester I've been taking 4 classes--A&P 1, music, philosophy, and statistics. I'm failing stats and am considering dropping it and taking it at a community college over a maymester. (I took stats in high school and this professor just make the class completely impassable, and I have all A's in my other classes.) I'm taking summer classes as well, but I just wanted to see if someone had some advice on this subject or maybe has been there. If I still have 3 A's even if I drop this class, and this is the only class I ever dropped (and probably will ever drop) do you think it would hurt my chances of getting in for spring? I have not been able to attend an info session at the school yet but if anyone has and they mentioned dropped classes would someone let me know? It's stressing me out any advice or help or info would be appreciated!!!!!

I have a W from stats - I first tried to take it 5 years ago at HCC while working full time. I took it again last year from another university and got an A. I got in so I guess a W is fine!

Thank you that makes me feel so much better!!!!

It is hard to tell what they are looking for when they are accepting people regardless.... Almost seems like it depends on which direction the wind is blowing that day determines what kind of candidate they are willing to accept.

Do what you have to do and pray for the best!! Good Luck! I know how you feel about stats! I'm taking it online right now as well as taking my microbiology class and work full time... I'm hating stats right now, but thank God I'm maintaining my A in both classes!

Yeah I'm just ready to get past stats as get through my micro class and the Hesi and ill officially be ready to apply...the wait is gonna be awful! I've wanted to go here since high school! (My mom went there for nursing school, class of '91) so I get my drive from her!

I posted the list of books a few pages back... just wanted to let y'all know that the Bruyere case studies book won't be used for patho anymore starting next semester, so don't buy that one! :)

Oceanise - How's your first semester going? I'm having daily panic attacks about starting school in May. I have two young kids so I cannot study at when I get home in the evenings. Everything must be done when I don't have class. You think it's possible to have enough study time during the days? Time management is vital to me!

First semester is very intense. You'll have plenty of breakdowns, meltdowns, shut downs ect the first semester ! ! So don't stress yourself now! It does have its rewarding moments but it also comes with huge sacrifices. The challenging part is adjusting to the heavy workload demand that's placed in front of you AND managing your personal life. Everybody adjusts differently and finds their own study groove. There are plenty of parents in our program that do well, they just have to find their way of balancing their time. It is possible to only study on non class days BUT that all depends on how you schedule your own time. What works for one person may not work for another.

Try not to panic! There's people in my class with up to 5 kids(!!) and many of them have been able to hang in there, although I'm sure there's plenty of challenges. Like you said, time management is vital! Be aware of when all the exams are, when you have to have things done by, and prepare yourself accordingly. Try to break the workload down so it's more manageable and definitely don't cram. Like, for care... you might set a goal of answering 20 NCLEX questions each day (from the Saunders NCLEX book, NCLEX-3500 questions, or whatever you prefer). Almost everyone has a hard time at first, but it'll get better once you figure out what works best for you and adjust.
