UTA general ED courses

So I am totally nervous about taking college algebra & statistics online at UTA. I am not the worst at math but I am not a math wizard either, LOL. I am thinking about taking these before starting my nursing courses. Anyone out there have any recommendations? Did you take them online with UTA?

I'm currently taking statistics online with UTA. It's an okay class but it's not easy to sit at the computer and spend hours trying to learn statistics alone. The teacher has audio lectures set to video slideshows and follows the book pretty close, so it's doable. I just find the content kind of boring and it's hard to find motivation to sit and do it. There is a quiz every week and 3 or 4 exams throughout the course. As for algebra and tech writing, I took those at a community college so I can't answer that. Tech writing is pretty intense though.

Hi, I took statistics (MATH 1308) online at UTA a couple months ago. I'm currently taking algebra (MATH 1302) online at UTA.

Statistics was hard when I first started it. It's not really math, not like any math I've ever seen. Once I got my head wrapped around it, it got easier and I got a 98. The teacher is good, the book is good and the online prerecorded lectures are excellent.

For algebra, I'm only 2/5th done with it but have a 95 so far. Teacher is decent, book is bad, but the online prerecorded lectures are good and that's what I recommend focusing on. Replay them if you need to and do the math problems along with the teacher.

For both classes, take the practice tests! If you understand how to do the math on those, you can do the maths on each real test. It is very doable.

Not sure what class you got but my class was open book. Which sure helped. I also found that they liked to repeat questions. The quizzes that were prior to test 1 were repeated on the test and final. It sure helped studying knowing that once I understood how to do something I wouldn't be thrown a curve ball.

With stats just remember slow and stead and use the internet to find the solutions; if you are unsure. I found the book was less then helpful explaining stuff. I used Khan academy online to figure out the more difficult stuff.

i just got done taking my 2nd college algebra online exam via UTA--like 30 min ago. this last semester, they have gone through some changes. the exams are proctored through Proctor U. a proctor will watch you on a webcam, have access to your computer, and can hear you during the exam. you are allowed on 4" by 6" index card for notes. you can use any type of calculator. you can have scratch paper. you are not allowed to get up during the exam for any reason. it is an additional cost for this service. this class is a lot of work. most of the grade is dependent on exam performance (80%), so you had better be hot when you test. you have 90 minutes to complete 20 problems--this sounds like a lot of time. for the first test, it was enough time to check my work and log out early. this last test had some math problems that took forever because they had 4-6 parts to them; typing in answers is time consuming as it has to be EXACT; graphing has to be EXACT and it is tortuous. try graphing some funky 6th degree polynomial that wiggles all over--i would rather work a double shift. i think of all the time i am spending on this and i want to cry. i missed my son's water polo game today for this awful class. :'(

Hi Lorren just a word of advice if you work full/part time DO NOT take college algebra with two other classes...you may be able to manage with one but two will kill u. The home work is ridiculously time consuming " I was putting in 30+ hrs per week getting them done" there is over 1000 homework questions, most of which are broken down into 4-5 different parts. College algebra was the MOST time consuming and challenging class I have taken throughout my RN-BSN journey. The amount if work is not feasible for the working class individual.

Thanks Shantel for the information! After reading through the forums, I have decided to try and CLEP out of algebra. I am not great at algebra, but I would rather attempt testing out of the course than to actually take it online. If you don't mind me asking, where are you in the program? What do you think of it so far?
