UT Tyler nursing spring

Published

Am applying to UT tyler nursing program for spring 2015. Anyone else applying? Feel free to post comments.

Are you doing the Traditional, BSN or the acclerated route? Because the due date for accelerated is September 15th so I do not think that they have accepted anyone yet for this program. I am confused...

Traditional. I will submit my app next week. But am enrolled in pathophysiology and nursing concepts. My advisor is on the Palestine campus. She gave me permission codes for enrolment.

But I think u should be fine, if advisor says u should wait after u are accepted.

I spoke with my advisor and for the traditional BSN you must take Concepts and Patho the semester before you would be accepted to the program. But like I said, that's for the traditional BSN so accelerated may be different. How was the TEAS for you? I take it Thursday!!

kvega,

I met with the advisor this morning. For the ABSN program, we take those classes after acceptance which I believe would be Jan 2015. The official program starts May 2015 so these pre-reqs are finished the semester prior to the program start date.

While I agree with most posters here that the Science is typically the most difficult, I ended up scoring the best on the science section. I was pretty suprised by that. I studied for several weeks specifically on science. The exam was not as difficult as I had anticipated which is probably because I was pretty nervous about it and so I studied very diligantly for it. In total, I prepared for about 5-6 weeks. It should be noted though that I quit my job to move to TX and pursue a new career in nursing so I do not currently work. This means that I had a lot more time and energy to prepare for the test daily.

I did use rainbowvahmet's post as another tool/guide for preparation. I highly recommend you read up on his "How I passed the TEAS" post. Furthermore, I consider the ATI study manual as pretty much mandatory. Read that book cover-to-cover and do it thoroughly.

It seems that some struggle with the math section as well. For some, it seems to be more of a time-management issue than actual difficulty with solving the problems. Here are some really important tips in my opinion to ensure that you have more time to complete the test.

When multiplying decimal numbers, the answer should have the same number of digits to the right of the decimal place. For example, if you have the ATI book, look at number 27, Pp. 309:

0.013 x 0.04

Some people I suspect actually do the multiplication here. You can do this but it takes more time. Looking at the answers though, it is clear that multiplying 13 x 4 = 52 because all four answers have the same "52" in them, but the decimal place is located differently. If you read the solution in the ATI book it explains this. It should take no more than 10 seconds to answer this question. Most people though, will work out the problem and spend at least 2-3 times on solving it, in my opinion.

Be careful though as consider this one that I just made up:

0.25 x 0.856 = 0.214

In this case, it is not as easy to locate an answer from say:

A. 2.14

B. 0.214

C. 0.0214

D. 0.00214

If you were to select D here you would be wrong because techically the answer is 0.21400 = 0.214. The reason is that 25x856 = 21400 NOT 214. I don't want to confuse anyone here but many math problems have "shortcuts" and so if you are one of those that has problems with running out the clock in math then it helps to learn some of these.

Tip for spending less time on polynomial type questions:

Simplify the expression: (x-5)(2x+1)

A. 2x^2 - 5

B. -9x - 5

C. 2x^2 - 9x - 5

D. 2x^2 + 11x - 5

Immediately, I can see by just observation that B is NOT the answer because the first term is clearly 2x^2. A, C, and D all have the same correct 3rd term as we can see easily that -5 X 1 = -5. So all we really need to calculate is that 2nd term which is -10x + x = -9x. So the answer must be C.

Let me know if I am confusing anyone...

LW

Tip for doing percentages quicker:

Pp. 304 of the ATI manual, #3. For me, I look to see if the problem can be easily solved just by thinking through it. The way I do this is I can see easily that 50% of 404 million is exactly 202 million. Thus, I know that a population decrease of 50% from 404 million is precisely 202 million. But the problem states the population declined to 288 million not 202 million. Using 50% as a reference, we know that A and B cannot possibly be the answer because they are way too small. Answer D cannot be right because 50% takes us down to 202 million; therefore, 71.3% would take us down even more! So... answer C is the answer.

Alternatively, you could take an easy 10% from 404 million =~ 40 million (rounding here). Again, I can easily see that 40 million from 404 million is 364 million which is still a long way off from 288 million in the actual question. Thus, A and B are eliminated as possibilities. At this point, you could triple the 10% to equal 30% to estimate the 28.7% answer. So, 30% is about 40 million x 3 = 120 million. Immediately, I can see that yeah... 28.7% looks about right because 404 million - 120 million is 284 million. This is pretty close to the question's 288 million so the answer is C.

If this confuses anyone, please just ignore it. I don't want to confuse anyone but at the same time some might find it useful. It probably does take some practice to think this way...

Regards.

I passed the TEAS! Did a lot better than I thought too. I turned in my application Thursday too! I'm going to total a little over 79 points! I am really happy with myself. September 15 is coming soon and I'll be checking my emails everyday for the 6 weeks following. Also, I stry Patho and Concepts on Aug 25! Yay!

Congrats @kvega . Am happy for u. Hoping we all meet in the spring.

Well alright, kvega! Congratulations!!! :)

Thanks! Are all of you applying to the Tyler campus? Im applying to the Palestine campus!
