USPHS

Hi,

Are there any USPHS commissioned officers who can share their experiences working in IHS facilities?

What is it like living in rural areas? Please share your stories with me because I am interested in joining USPHS upon graduation (finishing up my BSN and will be done in May).

Thank you :)

Congrats!!! All three of mine are completed as well, I just sent in my SGLI forms, direct deposit and notarized oath...hopefully soon! Keep us posted.

Hi all, can anyone answer my question. my background, medical, and boards are still pending since April. Do you have to talk to an investigator to get the background cleared? (I received a call to schedule an interview with the investigator). What about medical? Also, I just passed my boards so do i send them my copy of license?

also, BOP HR person said that "your orders for PHS has been requested" how long that's gonna take to get a response?

thanks all in advance.

goldensfo,

Yes you have to send them a copy of your license and a copy of the NCLEX passing certificate, congrats on passing. There will be an investigation for the BOP and one for the CC. You have to fill out paperwork for both.

Do you have all the medical requirements in? Do you have all the board requirements in? You have to click on the individual tabs to make sure all the requirements are met.

Find out who your CAM is and call that person. It is a long slow proccess. You have to be proactive!!!!!! to get anything done. Think like you are your only HR person with the CC. If BOP sent in your request for orders you will be put in the urgent catergory, meaning they will begin looking at your application seriously now. Do you know when BOP wants you to start?

Slavicnurse,

Congrats!, be proactive and call your CAM to find out the next step.

Got my orders and I'm in Tucson now looking at houses. I start at FCC Tucson next Monday (I drove down way early).

Specializes in Family Med, Mental Health, Public Health.

Congrats golden on passing your boards!!! YAY!!! Also, congrats rcjohnis on your new position in Tuscon! As for me, my orders have just been cut as well..but no security clearance yet. Backwards I know...I am getting frustrated about that too, because from my understanding, I am supposed to be waiting on the Equip email...but never got it! My CAM just called me last week and said my orders were done, and that he was scheduliing me to go to OBC in either October or November, as he wants me to go there first before starting my new job since its on an Army base and there arent any CC officers there (yet). Plus, he called me right before his vacation so go figure on that, I am just left hanging for a little while. Hopefully I can get the October slot and by then everything will be complete. Rcjohnis, you're correct it is a long and slow process, very very long and slow but hopefully it wil lbe worth it all in the end. I dont have to move since the base is right near my home so I kind of lucked out on that one. Well, keep me posted guys!

I called a CAM, she said I have all the requirements in, they are just waiting for my 1662 then they will "speed up the process"... BOP said they want me start in Sept, so i don't know if i can make it...

goldensfo,

make sure that you follow up at every step, ask "Is there anything you need from me?, Is there anything missing? It was 2 or 3 weeks after they received my 1662 that I got my orders, but I had to ask about everything. I was prior enlisted Navy and my Statement of Service was never received and I did not know about it for the first 4 months of the process. It would have held up my orders if I did not ask about it. Keep a copy of everything you send to the CC.

Ask the HR person at BOP when your 1662 made it into the Office of Commissioned Corp Operations and then add a several business days for internal processing, it takes time.

The HR person at BOP said she didn't know what is 1662. She said the Central Office takes care of those things, she just submitted my documents to them... So I asked her please please follow up on the central office. hopefully it gets done quickly.... :saint: I think i'm gonna get a job now and start working while i continue this long process with the PHS.

Sorry, I'm making it sound worse than it is. I had a special situation that most will not have. The BOP is more responsive than the CC. The warden has to sign the 1662 then it is sent to the Central Office for procecssing then to the CC. The Central Office had my 1662 to the CC in a day. When you talk with HR at the BOP facility call it Call to Active Duty Orders or a start date request.

I think the benefits of getting the commission will far outweigh the hassle of getting it.

yes you are right. it is definitely worth the waiting. however, i must start working in the meantime because i have student loans to pay off... I told the HR 1662 is the Call to Active Duty form. She then emailed me back "The information has already been sent." I hope she means the 1662. Well, I will check with the CAM after several business days. Thank you for your info & help :clown:

PHS got my 1662!!! now i'm waiting to get my license in the mail, send them a copy, then wait for the board meeting on Aug 25... the earliest possible start date is Oct... but finally things are moving now!:chuckle

In Washington State a person can go online and verify one's license and print out that verification. I did that and the CC used that printout as verification. Check to see if you have online RN verification in your State.
