Using "RN" After Your Name

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Years ago it seemed fairly common for nurses to add their type of license and or certification(s) after their name when it appeared in print, media, social papers, on checks and pretty much everything else. Some even added BSN and any other of a litany of degrees as well. But am noticing many nurses simply called or calling themselves just that. Cannot remember last time any nurse one knows putting "RN" after her name say on her drivers license or bank statment.

Is this part of a trend towards a more informal society?

Specializes in Mostly LTC, some acute and some ER,.

Occsionally I will put LVN by accident, but I don't do it intentionally.

I only use RN after my name at work. :)

Specializes in Psychiatry.

Although I'm proud to be an RN, I would NEVER 'advertise' it outside of the clinical setting. Just my $0.02, that is inviting the general public to ask you about their sore throat, rash, heart condition, hangnail, etc.

No, thanks.:nurse:

I have never put RN outside the medical arena.

i have absolutely no idea why anyone would put RN after their name outside of work. it's like John Doe, Police Officer..... Mary Jane, Cashier. laughable! i probably would put MD or PhD after my name if I had one because that's pretty damn impressive!

Specializes in ICU, School Nurse, Med/Surg, Psych.

I've used RN and MSN when I thought it would persuade the other entity to do thing my way..ie health insurance company denied claim. didn't work..:(

Specializes in Oncology, Triage, Tele, Med-Surg.

I accidently put the RN behind my signature on occasion, but just out of habit d/t signing charts all night. I would not do so otherwise, for fear of coming off pretentious.

I don't sign RN after my name on purpose. but I Often find myself signing my name, RN out habit. Usually I make some comment to the cashier or whoever, "Oh I didn't mean to sign like that." And to think I've only been a RN for a year.
