I'm starting this new thread to chat with everyone that's planning on applying to usf fall 2016.. I'm supper excited I hope that I get in.. Anybody else plan to apply to usf fall2016 nursing upper division

Also, on anyone else's degree works does it say that you're missing pre reqs? I'm assuming I wouldn't have been accepted if I didn't have all the pre reqs, but I'm just being overly worried something is going to fall through

The excess hour surcharge comes into play when you exceed the maximum hours for the Bachelor's Degree. I believe it is 110% of the hours.

In the Nursing Program I believe you get up to 180 credit hours towards a the Bachelor's level before excess hours surcharge applies. (I think this is what I was told a few years ago when I was at CON orientation.)

They told us that a few of us will likely have to pay the surcharge in the last semester.

They also told us that there were a few classes that they can take out of your undergraduate work that will help to give more room. Every case is different as peiple transfer in with different degrees and number of credits.

You can see how many are applied on Degreeworks.

For example:

On my degree works for my undergraduate transfer degree, I have a total credit hours applied of 123.

The 2nd degree program is 64 hours (or somewhere around that)

By the end of the program I will have 187 hours, so I will have to pay the excess hour surcharge for the final 7 credit hours in the 4th semester.

There is an "excess credit hour surcharge counter"on MyUsf so you can check if you will have excess hours after registering.

This ONLY applies to undergraduate studies. There is NO surcharge for graduate level work or transfer credit.

They will cover this at Orientation next week as well.

Hope this helps.

I also read somewhere that the excess hour surcharge applies to students whom received their first Bachelors degree after 2009.

I got my first B.S. Degree in 2005 so perhaps it does not apply.

Yes, if you entered past a certain date, it does not apply. It's in the Orientation Packet.

What packet? I have 164 credits shown in my degree work, so I'm concerned.

The surcharge also only takes into consideration credits earned in Florida.

If you have credits from other states, they do not apply to your count.

Have to disagree with you, mrphil79.

Q. What if I take a course as a transient student at another institution? Will that count toward excess

hours?

A. Yes. All courses taken as part of your degree program will count unless they are among the list of exemptions approved by law.

Does anyone know anything about the SAP policy? I read on the website that after you attempt 150% of credits required for a degree you become ineligible for financial aid, on degreeworks it states we need 150 for our degree so this would equal 225, but it also said on the website that undergraduates seeking a second bachelors degree lose eligibility at 180 credit hours. I already have 140 credit hours that transfer, so I am just a bit concerned about not being allowed to take out federal loans for the last two semesters of the program. Does anyone know anything about this?

Have to disagree with you, mrphil79.

Nope, you're wrong...

This is not possible to find on USF's website, but it's on UNF's and New College of Florida's website. Different state colleges, yes - but exact same law that all Florida public colleges and universities have to adhere to.

Explanation of Excess Credit Hour Surcharge | New College of Florida

(scroll all the way to the bottom - it's listed in what doesn't count towards the excess)

UNF - One-Stop Student Services - Excess Credit Hour Surcharge

About halfway down the page: ("Under Florida law, the students who are excluded are: Students who first matriculate at an out-of-state institution and transfer to FL with more than 12 credit hours").

Unless you only took one or two classes out of state before transferring in - those credits absolutely do not apply to your count. So yes, it is absolutely only credits earned at a Florida public college or university.

Have to disagree with you, mrphil79.

Also - I think you're confusing a transient student with a transfer student.

A transient student is an existing USF student that takes a class at another college to fulfill a USF requirement. This is like an existing USF student taking an approved class or two at HCC one semester and having the class automatically apply to your USF transcript.

A transfer student is like someone from Michigan State University who is coming to USF as a brand new (and permanent) USF student.

Yes, mrphil79, you're right. I just confused "SAP" and "Excess hours surcharge" because of the panic here. I attended online info session and here are screen shots about this.
