do you use gloves all the time??

Nurses General Nursing

Hey guys!

here it goes... The other day at clinicals (I'm a student:) ) I witnessed a herione addict fake a seizure. Well, the nurses who responded to this incident were amazing. At first they thought she was Really having one but after 15 mins of "jerking and foaming at the mouth", they quickly called her bluff. Anyway, one thing that really gave me the "heebie jeebies" was that out of the 4 nurses that assisted, only ONE RN wore gloves!!

Now this pt has hep-b and c (which they all new about) but even the iv nurse wasn't wearing gloves! The pt had soo many needle sticks (from iv nurse cuz she couldnt find a vein) and at one point she Bled all over the nurse who was trying to hold the pt down. In school, it is drilled in our heads, glove, glove, glove for anything that involves bodily fluids so I was really shocked that they would put themselves at risk... So, later on I asked one of the RNs (very politely) why she chose not to wear gloves and she replied that she works better without them:eek: !!!! So, I was just curious.. Do you, as healthcare workers, wear gloves All the time.... be honest, now;) If you dont, what procedures do you do w/o gloves?

If I didn't wear gloves I would possibly be in the hospital myself...I tend to make messes with many things I do.

Note to self: Good thing my passion isn't OR nursing. ;)

the pt was having a pseudo-seziure. she just wanted drugs and attention. At one point she stopped having her "seziure" looked at the iv nurse and told her to try the vein in her neck because she usues that one all the time...

oh yeah,

thanks to everyone for being so honest. I agree with gloveless caring touches... i think that is so important for patients to feel cared for. My main thing was seeing experienced RNs putting themselves at risk. I know that I have to protect myself and the pt health so I always use them.

I have said this before and I guess I can repeat it:

It it is wet and it ain't yours, don't touch it.

:roll :roll :rotfl: :roll :roll

I am in the middle of a rotten night shift, my body clock is at it's lowest ebb (4am), I have a fuzzy night-shift headache and you have just given me the biggest laugh I have had all night SmilingBlu - Thank you so much!(It is yours and can I plagerise it??????? :lol2: )

BTW - I agree. Hep B and C w/out gloves - ughhhhh!!!

I wear gloves for anything that is gross and yucky. I remember once I had clinicals in the ER and this one RN was just disgusting. She handled a bloody catheterized member ungloved and then didn't wash her hands until later. Later, I made a comment to her about it and she said it was hard to teach old dogs new tricks. Gross. She also did a direct stick into the vein to give a med and she did not glove up and got blood all over. I refuse to go to that ER anymore for patient care.

I thought everyone wore gloves all the time. Isn't that a hospital rule?

When you learn about standard precautions you will see how that works.

No, I wont wear gloves to go in a hold a dying patients hand.

Yes, for ANY body fluid, even to roll someone over deserves a glove up.

Depends on the situation of course and as

Smiley says: "If it is wet and it ain't yours

don't touch it." :D

Old decrepit nurses like me will remember being taught NOT to glove as it may offend a patient.....back in ancient of days before BBF precautions. ;)

Nowadays it is quite different with all the pathogens.....and better safe than sorry.
