Hello~
I have applied for the FNP programs at USA and UAB. I have been reading lots of threads here regarding these two schools. It seems that USA has alot more reading and seems more intense than UAB. Also, I have not read any posts with UAB FNP students complaining of a riduculous amount of reading and they seem happier with their program. These are just my observations from reading these posts. Does anyone have any insight or opinions they would like to share? By no means am I looking for the "easier" program, I just would choose a school that I feel I would be happier at and less overwhelming. Thanks!!!

Just pick the one that fits your life the best and stop worrying about the amount of reading. You are going to be in graduate school and regardless of which program you choose there will be a lot of reading -- thats how you will LEARN. And often the more you read the more you learn. All of the FNP programs are going to be pretty close related to the coursework - because the american college of nursing oversees the requirements. Graduate school is no picnic and you are expected to work independently, which means a lot of reading.
One piece of advice - if possible chose a local university - even if some of the classes are on line. It's nice to be able to use a local university library, use the local research librarian, and to be able to visit with your professors face to face. Besides the fact of the local networking opportunities.
BTW it might help if you wrote out what USA and UAB stand for.

Totally agree with previous poster...I am a UAB student and there is NO WAY I would tell you that we didn't have a TON to read. Pick the program that suits you and your life best. I have a feeling that every NP program is demanding in addition to it's quirks.
Thanks for the advice....I understand that graduate school will be tough and I am ready for the challenge. Maybe I should have asked the pros and cons to each school from students that attend or have graduated. I just hope I get accepted!! I graduated with my BSN with a 3.3 overall GPA, not really sure what else I can do to make myself more competitive.
OH a 3.3 isn't that bad. Just do well on the GRE or MAT tests, line up great references and write a killer essay.

I am almost through with the USA FNP program. I would not recommend the program. There is a tremendous amount of reading-but you need that at this point. I have heard great things about Univ. of Tenn. I am specifically not pleased with the administration and their level of support. I feel as though we are treated as an imposition. I would give anything to have had a brick and mortar education-but with 3 kiddo's and a husband that travels-online was my only option. On the upside--the USA program pretty much maintains a 100 percent pass rate on boards. And-with any program-there are some excellent instructors to go along with the ones who aren't. Good luck with your decision!
