USA Labor and Delivery RN moving to Australia

Published

I am an RN in the US, Washington State specifically, and I have been in the process of moving to Brisbane. I received eligibility from AHPRA, so now all I need is a job and a visa. I plan on staying in Oz around 2 years, potentially longer. I have a very open mind :) I have 3 years total experience, 2 years in Post-Partum, and Labor and Delivery, as well as 1 year in an OBGYN office. To my understanding, there aren't RN's in the field of obstetrics in Australia, correct? Will the fact that I only have experience in obstetrics hinder my ability to find a job in Australia? I am very open minded, as I said, and I am willing to work in any field of nursing that will have me.

Also, is it possible to get a Working Holiday visa just to get over there, and then apply for an employer sponsored visa once I am there? I just feel that it might be a little easier to find a job if I am physically there. Any answers or advise is greatly appreciated, as I have been in this process since December and really want to get down there as soon as possible. Thanks!

@US2oz.. dont worry about your visa.. as long as you got all your blood taken.. the medical exam you should hear within the next couple weeks.. after i had the medical part done, my visa was granted within i think it was 1-2 weeks.. such a quick and easy process it was! Yeah i emailed her today.. she told me she expects to email me next week with the outcome of my assessment.. i hope that outcome is YES approval.. if its not i think my head might explode! Good luck with everything and your visa.. we may be on the same flight together at this rate! Haha keep me posted.

Thank you Rachi! I just arrived 2 days ago, so I have been spending most of my time figuring things out, getting situated, etc. Today I plan on clamping down. I have a few people helping me find work, and I have also been looking myself, so hopefully something will happen soon! How about you? Did you get your eligibility letter yet?

Finally got my letter of eligibility! Gave my notice at work.. not scary at all lol.. but a little anxiety feeled.. cuz now its all real! I have emailed a few people about jobs.. but i get a little anxious about that. Im going to be leaving october 11. Definitely keep me posted! Good luck!

Hi there, I am just starting to look into the process of getting licensed in Australia... really overwhelming...

So the application is AGOS-04? summit to the AHPRA right?

Should I send the application with any requirement papers that I have available so they can get started?

I don't have to take the English test if I graduated from highschool and nursing school in US? Just need a letter from each school?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you

Congrats! Good luck.

hey anne1, not sure the exact code but the application is for overseas RN. download the form.. and start working on obtaining all the documents it entails. no u do not need to take the ielts test. I had to send a letter from my high school stating i was taught and assessed in english.. and i was exempt. any other questions let me know... such hell ahpra was.. make sure u have everything EXACTLY the way they want it. good luck!

Read the form. It clearly lists what you need to attach. And yes, filling in the form and attaching your documents is the only way you are going to get assessed.
