US Nursing Schools Accepting International Students

Hi Everyone,

I completed my BSN in another country and I would love to do MSN in the US ( Nurse Practitioner). I have family in Illinois, California, Texas, and Florida so these states are preferred but I wouldn't mind going to another state either.

Does anyone know of any schools US nursing schools that accept international students? :idea:

Will I need IELTS, RN, TOEFL or other exams?

Has any of you applied to US Nursing schools for your MSN or know anyone who has?

There a lot of nursing schools in the US and e-mailing or calling every single one to see who accepts international students is a daunting/unfruitful task. :mad: If someone could give me a direction to go in that would be great.

If you know any schools that I should contact or know anyone who has had success in this process please post something.

I would image you need RN so that would mean submitting application to a state and meeting requirements plus pass NCLEX

They almost all accept international students, because they can charge you a lot more money for "out of state" or international fees. You really need to decide what you want to study, then choose a school and work out what they want. Almost all have an OIS - Office of International Students. Each school will have different requirements for international students, although for MSN, esp Nurse Practitioner, it's very common that they require you to have a local RN license.

I completed my nursing degree in another country, got my RN license in the US and started working there, and am now completing part time MSN in acute care nurse practitioner. If you plan to enter on F1 student visa, you will need to show that you can support yourself financially for the whole course of study plus living expenses.

Be careful that the study you do leads to a qualification you can use in your own country if you need to go back later. For example, I would love to do nurse anesthesia, but we have no CRNAs in my country so it would be a silly choice for me.

I did a quick search found two but there are many other schools. You will have to follow all the general admission requirements which include have RN License and the international requirements. This is something you have to do yourself, since we do not have access to your record or know about your college program.

If you're looking at California go to the CA BRN website and there it has a whole list of schools. You can contact each of of them via email to see if they accept international students. Most of the schools do require you to have a local license. Right now some of them are on break, but for the most part you can get through to someone it just might take some time before they respond to your question. Good Luck

I can't imagine that there will be any legitimate MSN-granting institutions that do not accept international students. As already mentioned, international students pay out-of-state tuition fees in public universities which are costlier than if you are an in-state student. Definitely, your concern should be whether you meet requirements as different schools have different requirements. I have a foreign BSN and of 3 universities I looked at prior to starting my MSN, one required passing the CGFNS exam, another required foreign BSN credentials evaluation, and another just required an official transcript of records sent by the school where I got my BSN. I already had my green card when I enrolled for my MSN so naturally, I was assessed in-state tuition in the public university I attended. The green card allowed me to go to school and work at the same time with no restrictions.

If you are coming with an F1 Visa, you will need to show proof that you have enough financial resources to support the cost of your tuition and living expenses while you are a student. Be aware that tuition fees vary considerably among institutions. In my state, there is a significant variation in cost of tuition even among public or state-funded universities. The well-known public universities here charge higher tuition fees than some of the lesser known private institutions. Bottomline is, you need to do your own research or homework as this not something you can easily figure out by logging on to an internet forum such as allnurses.com.
