US nurse wants to come to UK

Published

Hello all!

My boyfriend lives in Nuneaton (near Coventry, Birmingham) and I am really interested in trying to work in the UK before getting married/engaged and jumping headfirst into nursing in a system that I don't really know.

I was wondering if anyone knew more about travel companies that take US nurses in the UK, I will have three years OR experience as a scrub tech and a year in nursing before trying to go over.

Any help would be great!

I looked into this option myself and actually contacted a agency called Continental Travelnurse. They have 13 week and up travel assignments. They are located in London and they will mail you out information on getting your nursing license there. It takes awhile, 3 or more months to get everything in order.

A recruiter called me back right away and was very helpful.

Good luck! Hope this helps!

The current wait for a license thru NMC is about one year.

Again do your homework, just looked at the site, it is a very new company, at least by the looks of it. And as it said, the first company. I can promise that it won't be anything like the US Travel companies.

The do not pay your housing, they offer a subsidy, as well as a travel allowance. Not sure how they are getting a license thru NMC in the three months, would have to see it to believe it. It takes much longer for a foreigner to get a license in the UK than it does in the US.

If it takes usually about 18 months before you have a visa that permits you to work, how are they doing it legally in three months? And the UK now also requires a twenty day program there before you can get your regular license,

If something smells too good to be true, it usually is. Sorry.

My next question is..

When can I start my paperwork with the NMC? I will be graduating from a Bachelor's program in May and therefore will not have a year's experience until May 2007, I didn't know if you could start your paperwork with the NMC before you had a year's worth of experience considering everyone says that it takes so long.

Which by the way, I have had every company quote that it takes 3-5 months for NMC paperwork to go through including the NMC.

I would definitely wait until you have at least graduated from your program and have then passed your NCLEX. They will need proof of these before they can start the process of licensing you. I don't think it is a bad idea to get a head start even if you will be a new grad. Did the NMC board have any specfic information on new grads? They would probably be your best source of info. Good luck with your school and your nursing pursuits!

greetings.. i, too, am interested in working overseas. does anybody know if the major issue is licensing or the work permit? i have eu citizenship so would only be looking for the license. i am very very early in the inquiry process - still in school(!).. so i'm just fishing for info!!

Licensing will be your biggest bottleneck, if you trained in the US. And if you are in an accelerated program, they are not currently accepted in Europe. They currently do not meet the requirements for any of the EU countries.
