Urine Assessment

Published

Hey guys, 2nd semester nursing student here. My patient this week is being treated for UTI, symptoms are starting to diminish. Upon assessing her urine, there was an odor, stronger than normal but not super strong like when the infection is going strong. How would you document (in narrative format) a medium-smelling urine?

I would probably use the words "mildly malodorous", but before doing that....

What kind of antibiotic is she on? If you're able to be with this patient again, I recommend going in with another nurse or your instructor to see if you're actually smelling antibiotics in her urine. This would be a normal, expected finding.

P.S. Zosyn pee is terrible. You've been warned. :)

Sorry, I just realized you requested narrative format.

"Patient's urine yellow, clear, mildly malodorous, with quantity sufficient."

She was taking oral Cipro, but then when she was admitted to the hospital they put her on IV Rocephin. No I won't be with her again, but in the future should I expect antibiotics to make abnormal smelling urine?
