Urgently looking for information on Parkland Residency Programs

U.S.A. Texas

Published

There are a lot of Parkland threads for past and present Residencies. We are considering a move to Dallas when I graduate (if I get a job of course). I've called the recruitment office at least 6 times in the last 2 weeks and either I never get through to anyone or they refer me to someone else, who then never answers. The only person I've talked to is the secretary and she can't answer much. I've left multiple voicemails. I plan on calling AGAIN next week but since it looks like a lot of people have been through the process and program I'm hoping someone here can answer some questions.

  • When do they post listings for the September start? There are quite a few openings listed still but it sounds as if most of the July positions have been filled (gathered through reading every.single parkland thread!). So now I'm wondering if they are for the September Cohort (although I was told by the secretary they wouldn't be up until July)
  • What do all the listings mean?? Example: 7N hospitalist, 7 South Hospitalist, 10W Medicine etc
  • Whats the difference between Nurse Residency and Nurse Fellowship?
  • How competitive is it? I'm concerned because I'll only be graduating with my ADN (I know critical care is probably out of the question), I am #1 in my class and have worked at my local hospital as a tech for 2 years though.

Any input or advice would be really appreciated! I'm worried I'm going to completely miss the listings for the September start since none of the current listings say specifically what the start date is.

Thank you all in advance!

Bethany

Hi Bethany,

When do they post listings for the September start? There are quite a few openings listed still but it sounds as if most of the July positions have been filled (gathered through reading every.single parkland thread!). So now I'm wondering if they are for the September Cohort (although I was told by the secretary they wouldn't be up until July)

The positions that are currently open are for the July start date from my understanding. If the secretary told you the September residencies will be up in July.I recommend you start checking the Parkland website July 1st for the job postings.DO NOT BE SURPRISED IF THEY DO NOT POST THEM IMMEDIATELY. I was told the ER residency was not going to be posted until late March/first of April and they didn't post until mid April:banghead:.

What do all the listings mean?? Example: 7N hospitalist, 7 South Hospitalist, 10W Medicine etc

This is the floor number, position, and what type of floor it is.For example, 7 is for the seventh floor ,N is for the north side, and it's a hospitalist floor.

Whats the difference between Nurse Residency and Nurse Fellowship?

Generally the residencies are for specialties like MICU,ER,SICU,BURN ICU,L&D and, NICU. The fellowship is pertaining to the med/surg floors and requires a two year contract.I can only speak for the ER residency which requires a three year contract, but I'm sure that is the case for the rest of the specialties as well.

How competitive is it? I'm concerned because I'll only be graduating with my ADN.

Generally, it's pretty competitive like everywhere else.I graduated from an ADN program and got hired in the ER.They held a hiring fair a couple of weeks ago for med/surg and many of my classmates received offers. They only require a BSN for the trauma internship.I believe your tech experience will help you.

I hope this helps ;)

Thank you! It helps a lot! I was just confused about the openings because they posted new Nurse Resident Openings on 5/28 If you don't mind my asking, whats the difference between a hospitalist and medical floor? Probably seems like a silly question but I want to apply to the right departments. At my hospital all the floors are specific specialties (I work orthopedics and neurosurgery, we also have an oncology floor, GI/GU floor, Cardiac floor, an entire floor for Renal and stroke patients etc.)

One last question for anyone that knows. How far in advance do they usually offer positions? I've seen a lot of people that have received offers for the July start already but If I go back to the September start from last year people didn't seem to find out until 4'ish weeks before they were supposed to start.

Thanks again and congrats on ER!! That would be a dream come true, although I'm happy to work in any type of acute care setting!

Thanks for the info gaby! I am graduating in December and am looking forward to applying to Parkland's internships (and Methodist) so any info you can pass along is great!

i accepted the critical care and trauma internship. you must have a bsn and above a 3.5 gpa. they let 200 people apply before they stopped accepting applications. around 60 were interviewed and 22 were hired. around 15 of my classmates were hired in various areas, and we all have 3 year contracts because of the new hospital opening.
