Hello all.
I just wanted to provide a thread that those going to Shadyside this year can communicate on. All input is greatly appreciated of course, especially those who have done the program. Has anyone else received the letter letting them know the fall 09 class is full and to wait for spring?
No, no. . .everything BUT the science is very basic (the math and english are basic). The science is the one section I'd actually study for. If you were a bio major you should be fine, but a lot of the people who never took college level science courses had to take remediation for the science.I took it a WHILE ago but I remember some anatomy type questions. . .I used a test prep book and some of the "practice for the NET" questions that are in one of the threads on this board and did well, and I am not a strong strong science student.
Okay, thanks. I have been studying the science alot, and I think as long as I review I should be okay. What prep book did you use?
Hi,
I graduate on December 18th (but have transitions after graduation) and I loved my time here! It was hectic and hard and overwhelming at times but I am really glad I chose this school and wouldn't change much about my time here. Hope all you 1st semester people are doing ok....and...for all of my fellow "I must get straight A's" students...just know that C=RN and don't let the occasional 80 or below bum you out too much! :loveya:
I have a question for those of you who still get on here but who started in the fall. What semester do you start learning how to make the bed and take bp and all that? I know clinicals don't start until the second semester but I was just wondering about the basic stuff you need to learn
In 102 learning lab they run you through everything step by step. There are people who have worked as PCT's who knew that stuff and people who didn't know the front end of a stethoscope from the back end...it totally doesn't matter which category you fall into...the instructors go over everything really well. You are asked to get a pen light, a stethoscope, and a BP cuff for clinicals. YOU DON'T NEED THE 300 DOLLAR STUFF! The basic equipment is more than adequate. Also, a clipboard with nursing cheats on it really reduces first clinical rotation panic :)

Thanks so much for the information it really helps. Luckily my bf is giving me his stethoscope since he just bought a new one so that's one less thing i have to worry about buying. One more question I just thought of, I could wait till my information meeting on Wed. but I'm curious now haha. As far as the scrubs go I know they have to be white but does it matter what brand or what style they are? I'm 4'11 so not many brands fit me Also do you need scrubs for the first semester or not until the second? I'm trying to figure out if I need to just go buy them all now or if I have a while to buy them here and there while I have some extra money laying around. Thanks
Hello everyone! Many thanks to the girl that told me to check out this site at the orientation on Wed. Dec. 16th. (Sorry I don't remember your name!?) This is awesome!! I am so thrilled to be starting this program and am just as excited to get to know some of you, my future classmates. Feel free to look me up on Facebook (Abbey Juergens). Just message me that you're going to school at Shadyside so I don't ignore you :) haha I can't wait to meet you all.
Best of luck with your Dr.'s appointments, CPR cert., compliance meeting, cup peeing, etc.
Anyone going to the school on Wed. Jan. 27th for the CPR? If so, see you then!
Peace,
Abbey
Hey Abbey welcome to allnurses! My name is Kayla, I was at the meeting Wednesday but I wasn't the one you talked to. I'll be at the CPR training on the 27th so I will see you there. But in the meantime come over to this forum https://allnurses.com/pa-nursing-programs/upmc-shadyside-2010-a-432230.html it is a new forum for those of us accepted for March, and then some trying for the fall. Hope to see you there, oh and I'm adding you on facebook.

You won't need scrubs until your second semester. They come and fit you for them at the end of nursing 100, and they're super anal about the brand and they embroider the school logo on the sleeve. You'll have to buy a lab coat with the school logo on it for the first semester; there will be a order form on blackboard or you can get one in nursing 101.
