I'm applying to UPenn for Fall of 2011, but Im concerned about whether or not I should go straight to grad school after I graduate (may 2011) or wait and get experience first? Also, does anyone have any idea of how difficult it is to get into UPenn's Pediatric Acute Care NP program?

UPenn kind of makes the experience decision for you. UPenn requires one year of pediatric nursing experience for their program. You must have the 1 year of experience prior to beginning the clinical portion of the program. However, you can apply to the program and work (getting your 1 yr experience) while you complete the non-clinical portion of the program.
I don't know how difficult it is to get into the program. I am starting the ANP/GNP program in May 2011. I think the PNP is probably has more applicants than ANP, but I really don't know. Of course, you will need a good GPA, good essays and a good GRE score if you are not exempt. Just go for it and good luck!

Prospective Penn students had an online chat earlier this week. Filomena mentioned that a lot of the BSN/MSN specialties are small...I'm interested in adult acute care and she said they have about 5-10 applicants for this speciality and admit 2-5. The same numbers applied to NNP, and the CRNA admits are even smaller. Filomena said that if you want to go BSN/MSN, you really have to sell the admissions on your area of specialty. Overall, they had about 400 applicants to the accelerated BSN/MSN last year and admitted ~23%.

Interesting... good to know about the adult acute care program! Does anyone know if these numbers apply to traditional MSN students as well?? Or just the direct entry group? Good luck to all, BTW! :)
I think the numbers only apply to the accelerated BSN/MSN.

Can that be right? 5-10 applicants only? I'm also interested in AACNP. That number seems extremely low compared with other similar programs.

Filomena was referring to the number who apply for the BSN/MSN program. She was not including experienced nurses who apply to grad school. The number accepted is the amount of seat set aside for the BSN/MSN applicants.

I am very interested in UPenn's ACNP grad program, already been working in an MICU for 2 years - does anyone have an idea of the number of applications received and how many are accepted? Thanks!
