Unsure of Career B/C of Misdemeanor

Nurses Criminal

Published

Hi! I am a senior in highschool. I am thinking about going into the nursing field however I have a misdemeanor on my record. I was 17 when it happened and it was my first job. I had minimal training with the cash register and because I was so flustered with customers I didn't check for ID's when selling cigarettes. I was in a sting operation and now I have this misdemeanor on my record. My aunt took care of everything because she's a police officer and I currently don't know what my current status is. I just know that the crime is considered a misdemeanor. I didn't show up to court because my aunt said I didn't have to. Anyways, first off, I applied to a college and was accepted except at the time of when I filled my application, my aunt told me I could say no for convictions. I'm starting to regret not looking up the information and being truthful about it. I also feel that I should've taken advice from someone else other than my aunt. I just don't want it to backfire on me. I will definitely tell the BON if I finish nursing school for my licensure. I am so worried about how much of an obstacle the path ahead will be. Will the BON find out if I said "no" for a conviction on my college application? Has anybody had a similar experience? If so, please share with me!

PS : This happened in Wausau, WI. I currently live in Minnesota.
