UNLV SON FALL 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hello everyone! :)

Since the Summer 2018 cohort is about to be announced, I thought I would start the forum for Fall 2018. Who else is applying? I hope the cut off score isn't as high as it was last fall!

I apologize for the late reply! Unfortunately, I scored a percent lower on my HESI the second time around. I increased all of my scores in every section except for the reading portion which dropped drastically. I found that they put a lot of the questions that I missed when I took it the first time. So, it was quite a bummer. I scored a 93 which didn't beat my overall of 94 from the first time. But it's alright I guess.

I appreciate your encouragement, bsnoptimist! I know we are all technically competing against one another, but I am glad there are still kind people out there :). I hope we all make it past the cut off.

Aprilie22,

I'm sorry you scored lower the second time, but honestly your score is still fabulous!!! I know we are all worried about not getting in, but I think with 95 points, you are good.

Aprilie22,

Aww, thank you for your kind words. I hope that we all make it as well. We are all just trying to achieve our dreams and with the nurse shortage in Nevada, you think it would be less stressful than it is right now haha. But at this point, I think that we are all qualified. :) It's just a waiting game.

Hey, you guys! So, if most of you have taken BIOL 251, you probably know how most professors do not use +/- when they assign final grades. Does this mean that when you receive a B, it will count as a 3.0 on the grading scale when calculating points? Even if our percentage counts as a B+?

Thank you :)

Hey Aprilie22,

That's a really good question! I think you should ask the academic advisors to make sure. As of right now, I would go with yes it would count as 3.0 because it says B and not B+. It is very unfortunate, but I don't think the Bio professors are thinking about the nursing school calculation sheet when they make their grading guidelines. Then you also have to think about the students transferring over from other schools who have professors who might have done the same thing. It seems unlikely that they would look into every student's circumstance and change it. One of my friends was complaining about this exact thing and she counted it as a 3.0 in calculating her score. If you find out otherwise, please let us know! That will make a lot of people really happy, haha.

Hello! I am also applying for Fall 2018. For those who have taken their HESI - does the test tell you if you answered correctly or incorrectly IMMEDIATELY after submitting an answer? Or do you not know your score until the very end of a section?

Also, is there a standard breakdown of the test? For example, is there always a certain amount of questions per section (e.g. 50 grammar questions, 30 A&P questions)? And what does the testing location provide/not provide you? I'm pretty clueless when it comes to the test, so any and all help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

Hi!

The test doesn't tell you what you have answered correct until the end of every section, and then you are just given a score. (Ex: 94%) Grammar, reading comprehension, and math are all 55 questions, and a&p is only 30. As for what is provided and not, there truly isn't anything for either party. You put everything into a locker upon arrival and they will wand you with a metal detector and make you turn out your pockets to ensure you don't have anything on your person. They do give you 2 laminated "scratch papers" and 2 dry erase pens that are given back at the end of the test.

It's really not all that bad. Good luck!!

Hey Lindsay71105,

How did your HESI go? I remember you saying that you were taking it at the end of last month!

Wow congrats, that's a great score!

What section was the toughest for you? Do you have any tips other than what's already been posted on the other UNLV threads? haha

Thank you.

My lowest score was reading comprehension but, honestly, it was due to the fact that that was my last section, I was tired, and had a headache so I just wanted to be DONE. (And I have been kicking myself over it ever since....)

The math section is pretty straight forward. Quite a bit of fractions, proportions, and a few conversions. Grammar got a little tricky at times because I would think too much into the question.

As for any other tips, everything I did to prepare has already been mentioned. I used the HESI book (by elsevier evolve) and the Pocket Prep app and really didn't study as much as I wanted to.

It's not as bad as it seems. I'm sure you will do great!
