University of Washington's BSN program 2014

Published

Good morning!

So I'm going to try this whole process over again, as a repeat offender...I mean applicant for UW's BSN program 2014. I applied last year, made it through the proctored essay portion but was not accepted. After nursing (haha) my wounds w/ large amounts of ice cream, chocolate & such, I've recently found my mojo to try again. Anyone else re-applying or 1st time applying for 2014? I know it's extremely early in the game, but those deadlines come up faster than you think! I've saved all the tips applicants that have applied more than once and hope that 2nd time is the charm.

Anyone else out there getting ready for it? We got this :D

For the personal statement, I can't really give you good advice b/c I didn't get in last year lol. It seems like they're wanting you to know yourself, know your strengths and weaknesses and how you know you have learned these about yourself from your volunteer/paid experience.

My question is, for that particular question, describe how each of the following have helped you identify your strengths and weaknesses as a future nuse, have you highlighted a strength and weakness for each point? Like A. Healthcare setting my strength is blah blah blah b/c of this reason and my weakness is blah blah blah b/c of this reason? Or do you just pick a strength or weakness from each. Two pages, double spaced and 6 questions doesn't give you a lot of space to work w.

Ha, I know! I finally just skipped A (for now) to move on because I was stalling. It's a very difficult question to answer. But as an example, for the healthcare setting one, I mention that I just finished training as an EMT and I've been working as a CNA for 6 months. I had to do clinical rotations in an ER, and my weakness is that emergency care does not interest me much, after all. I had difficulty with the idea of only treating the most imminent, life threat. I am much more at ease in the setting I work as a CNA, because even though I am more limited in scope of practice than being an EMT, I am a part of a longer term management team for a patient.

I have examples of situations because, in general, it makes essays more vivid, but with the strict limitations, I don't know how much will end up being cut.

Hope everyones application is coming along ok. Crunch time....

All the best pple...

I think my biggest problem is trying to talk about myself, no idea how to make it sound professional and ensure the points I'm trying to make....about myself lol. Ugh! I know one of my weaknesses...procrastination!

Me too. I remember thinking at the beginning of winter break from school, "Great, now I can work on the UW application!" Uhhh.... the only "work" I did towards it was to get a few more hours at the work place, ha!

That should count for something lol. I was only able to get a total of 200 hours in the past 3 months. I at least made the minimum, but I know there will be others with 1,000s :o

@ jes- imho, u need 2 ask urself...y r they asking the weakness question? Its not to open a can of worms or 4 us to expose ourselves, coz every1 has weaknesses. The important question is "what are you doing, have you done or plan to do?" For eg if u say you biggest weakness is procastination, dont just leave it hanging. Follow that up with ways that u r working in it e.g say that u have taken a leadership n time management class @ a local college, or seeked professional help and applied what you havd learnt to ur academic work....thus resulting to good grades. So maybe look at ur transcripts and see where u had average grades and compare to the improved grades. U can use that as an example if u implementing what u gsve learnt to improve self. Hope these points help!

They do help, thank you. I guess I'm worried bc my biggest weaknesses are the kind of things that are expected of nurses. If they see I suck at multi-tasking, they're not going to want me in their school. I don't know if I'm over-thinking it bc of last year?? I guess after all the work & time I've put in this year, vs. last year, I want it so much more, but stressed I still won't make the cut.

@ jes- i hear you. Just be wise in how you relay the message w/o shooting self in the foot. Don't overthink it; from what i've heard, they are more interested in your thought process/self reflection....another eg is u can use a fear/phobia that u had @ the beginning of you nursing career & show how u have over come it via exposure, shadowing, taking classes, volunteering....etc

Zico, you have been very helpful in calming my nerves and helping me focus, thank you!! I just really want to make it this year!!

U r welcome. Hang in there, u will look back 1 day & appreciate the journey!
