University of the Virgin Islands??

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello,

I was thinking of attending University of the Virgin Islands. I was wondering if anybody here is thinking about it, or nobody somebody that did.

Thanks

Billie

I am applying to UVI as well. The idea of living in Saint Thomas sounds amazing, however I am nervous about being so far from home (Memphis, TN) and will not know a soul. Does anyone know what areas of the island where students, specifically nursing students, live? Is the island safe?

Hi

My daughter is also applying and has the same exact concerns. We live in North Carolina, if you PM me I will get you her contact information and can discuss.

Thanks

kchez12,

I am new to allnurses. This may sound like a dumb question but how do I PM?

Hi

I am not sure. I wanted to get you my daughters email address so you guys can talk.

Let me see if I can figure it out.

Ok so Im new to this allnurses.com but have always looked up what people said about certain schools. Im looking to go to a nursing school just don't know where! I have looked at IUON - for BSN you can finish in one year and then go to purdue or colorado state to finish another 2 semesters. This is easier than what they say at the virigin islands. There you have to finish 4 years. I'm really confused. Is there anyone that is in the BSN program right now that had finished their undergrad in the states? Please let me know asap!

If you look at other posts on this site about IUON you will see that there are almost nothing but negative posts. I don't know much about it, but from what I've read on here I'd never consider it.

However, I did consider UVI... as the Virgin Islands are my favorite vacation spot (first red flag, lol). I was under the impression that they did not offer on campus housing and I have heard that St Croix & St Thomas are not necessarily safe, once again.. you can search for topics on this board with testimonials from travel nurses/students etc. My uncle owns a hotel on St Croix and he wasn't happy with the idea of me going to school down there, so I stayed up here in New York and looking at the big picture I think that was a good idea for me so I can actually pay attention to my studies without the temptations of "island life"

They do have housing even though it is not guaranteed. I am hoping my daughter gets housing or she can find a couple of people to go in on a rental. I am still looking into safety issues, I think it is like any other area, you just need to be careful.

I cant wait to go in the fall for the ADN

I am also seriously looking into going to UVI on St. Thomas in the spring, 2010 to pursue my BSN degree. I am from Wyoming and am debating about UVI or a school in Denver, Colorado. UVI, from the extensive research I have done, sounds like a great school and I would go in a heartbeat if moving there was not so extreme. It would be nice to chat with anyone who is in the same boat or has any advice. I have been accepted as a stuent there. Anyone out there thinking about going??

Camille, WY

My daughter is there right now and starts classes on Monday. If you have any questions maybe I can help.

Hey Camille,

I was going to go to school there - it might work out for you. I moved there, it didn't work out. Now i'm going to go to Regis in Denver. Feel free to ask more detailed questions about the VI - I'm happy to help. Will you be pursuing a second degree or is this your first time around? The VI is a wild place and is certainly not for everyone, but it can be your perfect fit if you're ready for it... Let me know if you have more specific questions.

Really she is? Can you please tell me how you went about moving there? Where did she move from? Is she living on campus or off? Did she know anyone who was there already? Anything you can help me with would be awesome! Thank you so much! Is she going into the BSN program?
