UTA AO BSN Fall 2018 Applicant - Need advice!

Nursing Students Texas (UTA)

Published

Hello everyone,

I'll try to keep this short.

My fiance has been an RN for almost a year and has her BSN from UTMB - Galveston.

She has always tried to talk me into becoming a nurse, but I didn't give it any thought.

I have full-time work as a financial analyst but it isn't what I had hoped it would be.

So, lately, more and more nursing seems like something I want/need to do. However, I don't exactly know where to start.

I have a BBA in Finance with a GPA of 3.3. Not great, but I sort of had school on the back-burner in my first go around.

It looks like in order to get into UTA's program as soon as possible, I will have to take a few prereqs BEFORE the January 15 application deadline. I need:

-Bio for Nurses

-A&P I

-A&P II

-Chem

-Microbiology

So, my questions are:

Does this schedule seem unreasonable while working full-time? I would obviously quit my job upon acceptance to the CON, but not until then.

8/14 - 10/16 Bio for Nurses

8/14 - 12/1 Chem

10/16 - 12/1 A&P I

10/16 - 12/1 Microbiology

Also, do you all have any other advice regarding my situation? I guess by the time I applied to the CON I'd have two additional considerations (12 UTA hours and a degree), but I know nothing of my chances or if having a different background helps... etc. Thanks for any feedback you may have!

Hey Everyone!!

Id really like some advice as well...

I recently decided to apply to UTA after looking at ADN programs with a bridge to BSN.

I have an associates in science from brookhaven..and work as a accounting specialist however thats not what I want to do. I have a husband and a daughter so money is of the essence.

So I intend on continuing to work while I finish my Pre-reqs.

So far I need :

All 3 pre nursing classes

Med term

A&P 1 and 2

Micro

stats

sociology

Current GPAis 3.5 overalland I got a B in Chem so 3.00

by the time I complete everything Ill have 30 or more hours with UTA and 12/16 Natural science hours with them as well.

So 2 considerations...

I intend on getting nothing but A's Im going to take my time so I can ensure I succeed...However I am unsure if I should retake my chem?

Anyone got any tips for the classes?

I don't know that I've ever advised anyone to retake a course, even a science course, unless of course their GPA is really shot. Assuming you make A's on and A&P 1 & 2, I think you're science GPA and overall GPA should be great. As far as considerations. I just wanted to clarify that the ADN to BSN bridge is for currently licensed nurses holding an ADN. You would only be able to apply for the online and on-campus BSN program. With that said, considerations all depend on which program you want to enroll in. You can apply to both and then decided if you're accepted to both. Online does not just take partnered students (students who work at a hospital that is partnered to provide a clinical site for the year/semester you are applying for), but more often than not, from coworkers and other students and members here, if you are partnered, you are more likely to be accepted online than if you just have some of the other considerations. I believe the reason they do this is because if you already work for let's say Parkland and enter the nursing program, then when you graduate the likelihood that you will have a job in your field secured prior to graduation is much more likely than someone who does not currently work for a hospital. The reason I think this is relevant is because we are surveyed prior to graduation about whether we have secured employment in our intended degree. UTA uses this information for recruitment tactics and likely some sort of tracking and funding. It just looks better on the university for them to say 'X' amount of people graduated in Dec 2017, and 'Y%' had secured full-time employment in their related field. On-campus, I don't really know anything about. Regardless, if you get all A's as planned, I feel like your GPAs and considerations make you a strong candidate for on-campus definitely, and quite possibly for online as well.

Hi everyone,

I am applying to both the online and on-campus BSN programs and am currently filling out the supplemental application. It asks for information regarding "General and Biological Chemistry" in one of the boxes. However, all the other boxes just require information for one class. Should I put the information for gen chem ONLY, or is it also asking for Biology I info? When I read Biological Chemistry, I think Biochem, but that is not one of the prereqs. Thanks in advance!

I would default to your advisor. You would not want your application to not be processed because of the deadline and a simple error. I'm not sure what the deadline is for whichever semester you're applying for (Fall 2018 or Spring 2019), but if it's coming up, then I'd just say get it in and put the info you do have. But most certainly follow up that there isn't an issue with that information.

Julie, I tried emailing you & responding to your post, but I don't think your email is correct. Anyways, I wouldn't retake Chemistry. The reason why I say this is because when I spoke to a nursing advisor, they told me that although they accept courses that ended with a C, it is best to have B's & above in the sciences. You can retake if you want, but there's absolutely no way I would retake Chemistry. Please send me your correct email address so we can communicate.

Hey thanks. I meant I'm unsure if the best plan would be to get my ADN then do a bridge program. Or if I should just go straight to the BSN program.

Hey txt me I'd love to have your tips on getting. In. Plzzzzz

Thanks for the responses! I did call to confirm and was told to put General Chemistry.

For those of you who have taken pathophysiology, I will be taking it along w/ Developmental Psych for the first half, and Intro to Nursing for the second half. I currently work full time as a medical assistant and am wondering if the load will be too heavy and if I should think about moving to part-time. Any insight is appreciated!

I've taken all those classes while working full-time, it was actually pretty easy... it was the combo Patho/Pharm at the same time that was a bit much for me.

pappa22v, did you take anatomy and physiology 1 or 2 at UTA? any advice for those, i'm retaking them.

Did anyone have to take General Biology as a prerequisite for A&P? I've never heard of this & it must be new. Any comments are appreciated.

Yes, it's always a prerequisite, though some schools will wave it depending on ACT/SAT/ATI scores.

I've never had it as a prerequisite. I took A&P years ago & just took Bio for the first time this past semester. Even when I applied to U of H years ago, it wasn't a prerequisite.

Hello, I have a few questions as well that would love for a current student to answer.

I am interested in the program, however I have noticed a few red flags. I called to get information about a month ago. Since then, I have received 16 phone calls from advisers.

I am just curious, if this is such a competitive program, why are they so interested in my application? I haven't even sent transcripts in yet.

Is it really that competitive?

I have been rejected five times to two other accelerated BSN programs. I am desperate, but skeptical. Do they just want me to become a student, take their "nursing pre-reqs" (I already have all other pre-reqs) just for the money? What if I do that and then they deny my application?

Has anyone been in a similar situation?

Thank you!
