UTA AO BSN Fall 2018 Applicant - Need advice!

Hello everyone,

I'll try to keep this short.

My fiance has been an RN for almost a year and has her BSN from UTMB - Galveston.

She has always tried to talk me into becoming a nurse, but I didn't give it any thought.

I have full-time work as a financial analyst but it isn't what I had hoped it would be.

So, lately, more and more nursing seems like something I want/need to do. However, I don't exactly know where to start.

I have a BBA in Finance with a GPA of 3.3. Not great, but I sort of had school on the back-burner in my first go around.

It looks like in order to get into UTA's program as soon as possible, I will have to take a few prereqs BEFORE the January 15 application deadline. I need:

-Bio for Nurses

-A&P I

-A&P II

-Chem

-Microbiology

So, my questions are:

Does this schedule seem unreasonable while working full-time? I would obviously quit my job upon acceptance to the CON, but not until then.

8/14 - 10/16 Bio for Nurses

8/14 - 12/1 Chem

10/16 - 12/1 A&P I

10/16 - 12/1 Microbiology

Also, do you all have any other advice regarding my situation? I guess by the time I applied to the CON I'd have two additional considerations (12 UTA hours and a degree), but I know nothing of my chances or if having a different background helps... etc. Thanks for any feedback you may have!

I'm applying for Fall 2018 as well. I will be completely honest here. If you were not working, I'm pretty sure you could pull of that schedule. Considering UTA cares a lot about the Sciences GPA, you would have to literally work your butt if you are not familliar with those subjects. To be competitve you really want a 4.0 science GPA. I usually did 2 sciences per term with like government and history so that it wasn't too hectic and at time it still was. So honestly you just have to assess the time you have to devote to stuyding these because each of these will of course have a lab component which could seem like an additional class sometimes lol but of course only you know your abilities. Good luck with your decision :) P.S It's ok to take it slow and push your application back a term to ensure your success. I took my time and will be applying with a 4.0 science and 3.94 overall. it took forever seems but paid off

Actually, you will not make that January 15th deadline. I was in your shoes last year, and you also need:

Intro to Nursing

Upper Level Elective

Pathophysiology

Pharmacology

No matter what anyone tells you, do not try to do all of those in one semester. I wouldn't even take Patho and Pharm in the same semester again. If you apply, keep some things in mind... Houston clinical locations are VERY VERY LIMITED. Very few people are admitted every semester, and it is very competetive.

I was told by a registration representative that I would just have to complete those other four before the actual program starts in August '18. So I would have all Spring and Summer to complete them, to my understanding. Could be wrong, however. Also, I am living in Fort Worth!

A) Have you taken any sciences before? I thought (and could be wrong) that Chem had to go after your other three?

B) If that is possible, when would you take a and p 2?

C) You could manage your last four taking them in summer and fall, people do it all the time, it just isn't recommended that you take patho and pharm together.

With that said, these classes have quite a bit of busy work, so just keep your study habits in mind.

Is it doable, yes, if you're ok with no life!

I'm at UTA and take 3 classes each 8 weeks, I have no life and my friends think I've abandoned them, but my future is more important than my present social life!!

Clearly your fiancé knows how tough nursing school is so you have some help as far as her being understanding!! Good luck to you!!

Hey!

Let me see if I can help.

Bio and Chemistry can be taken together since Chem prereq is college algebra which I'm sure you have.

Micro and A&P1 I think should be fine together, just consider every science course has a lecture and lab portion. I did mine through DCCCD b/c it's cheaper (not together though and def not working full time), and no problems... but if you know what you want and you have the luxury of a set schedule, you can manage your study time no problem I think.

In Spring I'd recommend Intro to Nursing, Upper Division elective (If it's required for you. Some previous upper division courses have been substituted for the elective for friends of mine, despite what the website says so check with your advisor at the College of Nursing) and take A&P2. I did a science and those 2 UTA courses and it's manageable. They're online, and one of those is a super short class, 5 weeks I think. Summer, take Patho and Pharm. Yes, it's heavy. But that is exactly what the program is like. Distant learning, student driven study. 1 exam every week just about, plus assignments and clinicals in between. So if you can make it out of those two.. you'll get a feel for the program. Your 3 sciences will be one of your ranking GPAs so As are highly recommended. That will bump your overall too. UTA is infamous for wanting technical writing and I don't believe that's changed so look into that if it wasn't required for you BBA. Also, THR takes up to 10 of the students with previous bachelor and offer a scholarship. Fort Worth isn't super close, but it might be worth considering. I think it's 100% reimbursement, but they want a contract. Don't quote me on that though. Looks like you're in for a heavy next 2 years, but it's doable. Just do it. You won't regret it. Good luck!

I live in Houston , Tx and transfered to UTA 2017 after graduating from Houston Community College with my Associate In Arts.Im trying to meet the deadline of January 15th for Fall 2018 nursing school.I'm enrolled in Patho and Pharm cause ive compled tech writing, Legacy of Family and Intro to Nursing with UTA that they require.I wish I would have split Patho&Pharm but I just finish General Chemistry 1 summer one with my previous colllge cause my intro to chemistry didnt transfer.In order to take Patho and Pharm you have to have General Chemistry completed.So now Im a lil worried taking these two together. If I don't take the both then ill be set back way yo the next application deadline.Then I stll have the hesi to do.I think Ima just work part time so I can focuse on these classes. Any advice from anyone! Anyone in the Houston area taking these courses please let me know so maybe we can form some study group or something.

Why don't you take patho this fall and pharm in the spring? You do not have to have them completed to apply, they just have to be done before you start the program.

So I'll be honest also. I graduated in 2011 from UTA with a BA in Communications. I applied for both the AO Program and the On-Campus program.. my Science GPA was a 3.5. With a degree consideration and an alumni consideration... I was waitlisted for both programs. It's very competitive. You need to get As on all your science courses you have listed and apply for both programs. I ended up in the OnCampus program and I love it.

Do you mind sharing what your weekly schedule is like? I'm sure it changes regularly, but I am also applying for the online and on campus programs at UTA (fall 2018) and wanted to have some idea of what to expect!! Thank you!

Hey Everyone!!

Id really like some advice as well...

I recently decided to apply to UTA after looking at ADN programs with a bridge to BSN.

I have an associates in science from brookhaven..and work as a accounting specialist however thats not what I want to do. I have a husband and a daughter so money is of the essence.

So I intend on continuing to work while I finish my Pre-reqs.

So far I need :

All 3 pre nursing classes

Med term

A&P 1 and 2

Micro

stats

sociology

Current GPAis 3.5 overalland I got a B in Chem so 3.00

by the time I complete everything Ill have 30 or more hours with UTA and 12/16 Natural science hours with them as well.

So 2 considerations...

I intend on getting nothing but A's Im going to take my time so I can ensure I succeed...However I am unsure if I should retake my chem?

Anyone got any tips for the classes?

Hi everyone,

I am applying to both the online and on-campus BSN programs and am currently filling out the supplemental application. It asks for information regarding "General and Biological Chemistry" in one of the boxes. However, all the other boxes just require information for one class. Should I put the information for gen chem ONLY, or is it also asking for Biology I info? When I read Biological Chemistry, I think Biochem, but that is not one of the prereqs. Thanks in advance!
